What You’ll Do

 

L+M has a strong track record of developing affordable housing at the vanguard of energy efficient design and operation. As a Sustainability Intern, you will work directly with the HVAC and Energy Manager within the Energy and Sustainability team to support sustainability initiatives across L+M’s building portfolio, creating an inventory of HVAC system types across various buildings, driving NYC local law 87 and local law 97 project execution and implementation, including the management of consultants across project sites, as well as other activities related to sustainability and energy efficiency in specific development and retrofit projects.

During the internship, the intern will gain exposure to different jobsites, NYC local laws, types and configurations of building HVAC and mechanical systems, energy management through data analysis, troubleshooting operational issues, and presenting to senior management on best practices and lessons learned.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Support HVAC equipment training and preventative maintenance initiatives, including schedule development, content development and management, and outreach to building managers and operators.
  • Manage training platforms and gather feedback from site teams to ensure effective delivery and continuous improvement.
  • Manage consultants and collaborate with onsite building staff to ensure timely execution of NYC local law compliance projects (LL87, LL97, LL88) while tracking project progress and providing weekly updates to the HVAC and Energy Manager.
  • Assist with information requests from providers, contractors, and consultants to streamline project progress.
  • Assist with building an inventory of HVAC system types by collecting and organizing onsite data, as well as collaborating with the HVAC and Energy Manager, supers, and property managers.
  • Conduct research on innovative energy efficiency products and projects as needed.

This role requires a highly proactive and results-oriented individual who takes full ownership of tasks and executes them efficiently with a strong commitment to delivering high-quality work. The ideal candidate values productivity, shows initiative, and consistently meets deadlines without the need for excessive oversight.

  • Graduate student or rising senior undergraduate student preferably majoring in mechanical engineering.
  • Experience with data analysis and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Self-starter who has a track record of being able to manage tasks independently.
  • Experience or knowledge of one or more of the following topics: NYC local law compliance, building/HVAC systems, built environment, sustainability, electrification technologies and renewables.
