SENIOR AUTOMATION ENGINEER (AUTOMATION ENGINEER III)

SUMMARY:

The Senior Automation Engineer maximizes efficiency of aerospace fastener production by implementing new machines and processes. They must consider the ergonomics, workflow, safety, quality standards, and work force utilization to develop the most reliable and efficient processes using the latest technology.

 

The Senior Automation Engineer is expected to be able to lead automation projects from start to finish. The engineer is expected to have a high level of technical expertise in Robotics, electronics, PLC, integration, and mechanical design.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, develop, build, and test automation and robotic systems for new and existing equipment.
  • Create electrical schematics and design control panels using AutoCad Electrical.
  • Create solid models and detailed drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Enter machine drawings, electrical schematics, BOMs into machine manuals with the correct labeling as well as backed up in the correct locations.
  • Responsible for the design, budget preparation, planning and scheduling, procurement, installation and commissioning of capital projects
  • Drive automation improvements and implementation to improve Operator safety, Machine efficiency, and plant capacities.
  • Diagnose mechanical and/or electrical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs as necessary.
  • Focuses on and documents cost reduction initiatives for design implementation, maintenance, and repair work.  
  • Ensures systems meet safety, quality and production rate requirements.
  • Assists in the research, design and development of manufacturing processes including production flow, assembly methods and production equipment.
  • Coordinates product/process analysis for cost reduction, quality improvement, and improved efficiency.
  • Conduct machine PLC programming diagnose, troubleshoot and debug software programs to modify automation or robotic systems.
  • Conduct research on robotic technology to create new robotic systems or system capabilities.
  • Able to perform tool design (fixtures) with use of computer assisted design applications and programs.
  • Relies on experience and judgment to plan, organize, and accomplish set goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate with production management to analyze data and site metrics to identify opportunities for automation
  • Works under limited supervision with a certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.

  • All employees are required to bring any known or suspected nonconformance for all company procedures or legal requirements to management’s attention immediately.
  • Implements and suggests waste elimination initiatives specifically related to the function and department such as EMS and recycling opportunities to elimination of production waste.
  • Attend all required job-related training (internal and external)
  • Share insight, solutions, and best practices within team and other local LISI sites
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to other members of the automation team.

ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Education and/or Experience

  • B.S. Degree in Automation, Mechanical, Industrial, or Electrical Engineering, with 7+ years of related experience.
  • Proven ability to successfully manage large and complex hardware/software automation and robotic integration projects
  • Advanced knowledge of PLC programming experience with any of the following: Rockwell Rockwell Allen Bradley, Automation Direct, Siemens, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of vision inspection systems, preferably, Keyence or Cognex
  • Proficient in Solidworks
  • Fanuc robot programming experience, or similar.

                                               

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyzes, and interprets general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Demonstrated ability to read code/machine language, write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 

Mathematical Skills                                                 

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

Reasoning Ability                                                    

Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract concrete variables.

 

Computer Skills                                           

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have advanced knowledge and skill with PLC programming software/languages, of Microsoft Word; Microsoft Excel; Microsoft Access and Computer assisted design (CAD) proficiency.
