The Ebook Development Assistant supports the larger Simon & Schuster Ebook Development group. This role oversees ebook production for a small number of S&S imprints and is responsible for the egalley production process. Reporting to the Director of Ebook Development, this position also assists on various ebook production projects and occasionally with other groups to purchase and catalog fonts, coordinate production scheduling, and implement corrections and general quality updates.

  • Create egalleys in-house and with conversion vendors
  • Produce ebooks for several smaller S&S imprints · Purchase fonts and catalog them in font management system
  • Order supplies
  • Support the Ebook Development Director and larger S&S Ebook team.

Workflow:

  • Create egalleys in-house and with conversion vendors
  • Work with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Oxygen XML Author to create reflowable egalley files or send source files (PDFs, InDesign Layouts) to a conversion house
  • Review converted egalley files to ensure adherence to department specs
  • Run production scripts to finalize egalley files for distribution
  • Archive assets, upload and troubleshoot with egalley sites
  • Produce ebooks for several smaller S&S imprints
  • Re-conceptualize or reformat print-oriented designs for digital reading 
  • Create ebooks in-house or send source files--PDFs, InDesign, Quark, and physical book scans--to a conversion house for translation to ebook formats 
  • Review ebooks for content consistency, design, validity, and cross-platform functionality; making small-scale corrections to ebooks and requesting large-scale corrections to be made by a vendor
  • Archive finished ebooks
  • Purchase fonts and catalog them in the font management system
  • Order supplies
  • Support the Ebook Development Director and larger S&S Ebook team.
  • Assist on various projects that arise throughout the year and help other developers as needed

Key Skills: 

This is an entry-level position, and as such, there are no key skill requirements. However, any experience in the below are a plus:

  • HTML/CSS
  • Adobe CC, specifically InDesign and Photoshop
  • Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Prior ebook experience of any kind
  • Prior publishing or production experience of any kind
