Purpose of this role:

The Vice President of Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the safety, health, and environmental programs for Savage Companies’ Infrastructure Sector. This role will ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, and will work to create a culture of safety and environmental stewardship throughout the organization. This role will collaborate closely with sector leadership and other safety leaders across the company as needed.

 

What you'll be doing: 

Including but not limited to the following:

  • Work together with all sector leaders to create a strong safety culture that flows throughout the organization.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive safety, health, and environmental policies and procedures that meet enterprise safety requirements and goals.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards, including OSHA, EPA, MSHA, DOT, FRA, and other federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Lead and manage the SHE team, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure effective program implementation.
  • Conduct regular audits and inspections to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards.
  • Support internal and external safety, health, and environmental audits.
  • Lead the process of researching, obtaining and maintaining all environmental permits.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to educate Team Members on safety, health, and environmental best practices.
  • Investigate incidents and accidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Represent the Infrastructure Sector in safety discussions with customers, partners, and regulatory agencies.
  • Collaborate with other departments and Excellence Councils to integrate safety and environmental considerations into all aspects of the company's operations.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators related to safety, health, and environmental performance.
  • Stay current with industry trends and best practices, and continuously improve the company's SHE programs.

 

Requirements to be successful in this position:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Operations, or a related field. A Master's degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a safety management role within industrial environments, with at least 5 years in a leadership position.
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of safety, including a mix of MSHA, OSHA, DOT, FRA and EPA regulations, and American Petroleum Institute guidelines.
  • Certification in safety management (e.g., CSP, CIH) required.
  • Ability to work with and advise all levels of Leadership and objectively coach Team Members and Leaders through complex and difficult issues
  • Exercises good judgment and effectively use decision-making skills.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and identify solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Analytical thinker who can align people actions and initiatives to business priorities.
  • Exceptional leadership abilities with a talent for inspiring and guiding team members.
  • Ability to effectively work in a matrixed organization.
  • A collaborator who takes initiative and is proactive.

 

Physical requirements: 

  • The role involves working in both office and field environments.
  • Ability to travel up to 40% to meet the needs of the business.
