Delong Mountain Logistics is hiring Drivers who will drive heavy industrial diesel-powered tractor with single or double heavy-duty bulk trailers, flatbeds, or lowboys.  Our drivers travel on remote gravel haul road through a National Monument for the transportation and delivery of products, materials in liquid or dry form, or equipment.  You will work rotational shifts and stay for extended periods at a remote camp where your room and board will be provided while on site.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Attendance and timeliness are essential functions of this position
  • Drives truck between mine and coastal port in remote, environmentally sensitive area in Alaska
  • Tracks loads and documents on in-cab computer and on time sheet
  • Complies with all company safety policies and Fit for Work policy, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Operates all company vehicles and equipment in a safe and professional manner
  • Inspects truck, truck equipment, and trailers for readiness of all equipment and components such as tires, lights, brakes, suspensions, hydraulic system, fuel, oil and water, for defects before and after trips and submits reports indicating truck and trailer(s) condition. Fuels, torques lug nuts, and assists in repairs when necessary. Maintains truck cleanliness.
  • Inspects exterior of equipment for cleanliness and for leaks, excessive wear, or damages
  • Responsible for verifying that on-board computer and future camera systems are function and reporting any lack of function of these systems to maintenance.  These systems take photos and/or video in outward and inward facing from/toward the cab.
  • Maintains safe radio communications with office, shop and other drivers while on haul road
  • Performs emergency roadside duties such as changing fuses or light bulbs. Possesses mechanical aptitude necessary to determine plan of action in emergency situations with direction of mechanics via radio.
  • May be required to hook and unhook trailers as well as crank landing gear or turning large screw jacks
  • Steers, moves levers with hands and feet, shifts gears, and presses pedals to drive and control movement of truck and other equipment. Climbs ladder on tank trailers as necessary.  Climbs on lowboy or flatbed platform or trailers as necessary.
  • Works varying scheduled shifts which vary from days to nights, beginning every 90 minutes throughout the 24-hour day schedule.
  • Possesses a willingness to follow direct orders and to adhere to policies and procedures

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Five years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of training and experience.  Experience driving trucks with gross weights in excess of 140,000 lbs.  Experience pulling single and double A-train and/or B-train trailer combinations.  Six months of driving in Arctic conditions, in a Class A commercial vehicle.  Familiarity with the proper operation of low rpm diesel engines and/or agree to an expectation to learn.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, memos, training manuals and operating procedures and policies. Employee needs ability to write simple reports and correspondence, and to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations with other employees of the organization. Ability to communicate effectively with other employees and customers in the English language.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, percentages and to draw /interpret bar graphs.

 

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply commonsense understanding in carrying out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Employee must meet Department of Transportation requirements. They must have a CDL with Class A, Air, Doubles, Tank and HazMat endorsements.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Good public relations skills are a must.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The employee is regularly exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and risk of electrical shock. The employee works with and near toxic and caustic chemicals such as chlorine and cleaning solutions.

 

The Red Dog Mine is a remote location with rotational schedules.  Lodging and meals are provided to those working on site.  Transportation between Anchorage and the remote site is provided.  The successful candidate must be able and willing to work at a remote site for up to four weeks at a time and may be required to work different and varying shifts during the scheduled rotation.  Generally, work shifts are alternating between day shifts for a rotation, and nights for a rotation.  Shifts are based on a twelve-hour workday, however, required hours can vary based on workload.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.   Hearing PPE is required to be worn during times when the noise level is increased due to work being performed by yourself or others in the work area.
