The Safety and Environmental Intern will work under close supervision of the Safety and Environmental Health Manager and perform safety and environmental audits, ergonomic assessments, industrial hygiene monitoring, accident/incident investigations, and safety/health training. This position will contribute to the overall improvement of environmental health and safety programs and processes.

- Review and make recommendations to update environmental health and safety ﴾EHS﴿ programs and policies to ensure the health, safety, and security of employees and assure compliance with applicable governmental regulations and corporate policies.
- Provide EHS assistance and support for all management and manufacturing staff members.
- Assist with safety related incidents within the facility to prevent future loss.
- Perform safety and environmental audits, inspections, and accident/incident investigations by observing employee activities and workplace conditions, submitting recommendations to the Corporate Loss Prevention team to correct deficiencies, eliminating hazards, and improving the overall programs and processes.
- Perform ergonomic assessments under the direction of the Safety Team. Maintain a list of ergonomic scores as they relate to lifting and hands/arms.
- Assist the Safety Team with recording notes, safety suggestions, and gather inspection forms from Safety Committee members.
- Conduct a chemical inventory of all chemicals currently used on the manufacturing floor and upload/cross reference the MSDS Online database to ensure all are accounted for and organized by specific departments. Ensure all chemicals have appropriate container labels and download all chemical label information into the DuraLabel printer database.
- Develop Safety Toolbox Talks and Safety Workshop training materials to incorporate information from previous Safety Alert announcements and when there is a policy update.
- Create and maintain department specific binders to include all current job hazard analysis ﴾JHA﴿, job safety procedures ﴾JSP﴿, and personal protective equipment ﴾PPE﴿ for all routine job tasks in manufacturing. Organize and maintain a spreadsheet to track all assessments and their revision dates.
- Collect all waste summary reports, air emissions, rain gauge information, and tank and portable container inspections from all applicable facilities on their respective frequency basis.
- Follow Six Sigma lean manufacturing standards to keep work area clean and safe from hazards.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the nature and level of work.
Qualifications
Currently enrolled in a Bachelors degree in industrial, environmental, safety, or related discipline from a four year accredited college or university required. Must have knowledge of OSHA, EPA, federal, and state regulatory compliance requirements.
Strong interpersonal skills required to interact with all levels of staff including manufacturing, supervisory, and management staff. Excellent oral and written communication and facilitation skills. Effective computer skills necessary with ability to use Microsoft products. Ability to inform, educate, and influence employees to support corporate goals and initiatives. Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with people, projects and issues. Ability to define problems and resolve them quickly. Ability to work well with ever changing priorities and/or situations.

Occasionally required to stand, walk or sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
