General Function
Under the direction of the Head Coach, the Lead Age Group Swim Coach creates workouts and training plans for their assigned age group(s) and provides leadership and support for all Swim Coaches. The Lead Age Group Swim Coach supports and directs all participants and volunteers, serving as a role model. The Lead Age Group Swim Coach will ensure all swimmers receive encouragement, support, and motivation from the coaching staff.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintain a roster of the group's swimmers and monitor each swimmer’s attendance, meeting participation, and event selection.
- Evaluate swimmer's skills; provide skills needed to master strokes. Makes recommendations for events at meets.
- Develop key targets for the practice group. Promote and facilitate growth toward the next practice group level.
- Develop (with the Head Coach director) and execute practice workout regimens for practice groups. This includes in-water workouts, dry land workouts, and stretching regimens, as well as injury-preventative exercise.
- Coordinate with age-group parents for treats, socials, and special events (i.e. gatherings at travel meets).
- Write for the team website after major swim meets. Focus on recognition for swimmers.
Education/Experience/Training/Certifications
- A minimum of two years of competitive swim team experience is preferred. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of coaching experience as well as knowledge of skill and stroke development.
- Certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certification, and concussion training that meets state standards.
- Current YUSA coach safety training, concussion training, and Principles of Competitive Swimming and Diving; if not currently certified, must certify within 90 days of employment.
Abilities & Skills
- Be present at a majority of the group’s practices.
- Maintain open lines of communication and provide leadership and support for other coaches who train swimmers.
- Provide a safe environment that allows swim team participants to learn YMCA Competitive Swimming.
- Ability to work a non-traditional schedule including nights and weekends.
