POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the supervision of the EVP of Finance & Operations / CFO, the Controller will assist in guiding and directing the financial analysis to assess the effectiveness of controls, accuracy of financial records, and efficiency of operations. Responsibilities also include working with the EVP of Finance & Operations / CFO carrying out established policies and business practices, managing the year-end audit and tax preparation, creating financial analysis of proposed projects, and supervising various accounting staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Manage financial reporting cycles within established timelines, including the review of internal financial statements to ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Monitor branch budget performance and provide variance analysis with recommendations for action.
- Assist with the development and review of financial forecasts for the Association, including preparation of any required reports for the EVP of Finance & Operations / CFP and Finance Committee.
- Lead the annual budget-building process, including working with branch and department directors to develop, review, and finalize budgets.
- Assist with the preparation of financial projections to support strategic planning.
- Maintain and review internal controls to safeguard the Association’s assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and accounting/tax standards, including overseeing the preparation of required tax returns and other mandatory reporting.
- Coordinate the annual audit process, working with external auditors, ensuring timely completion and implementation of any recommendations and/or findings.
- Manage the Association’s cash flow, ensuring sufficient liquidity to meet operational needs.
- Work with accounting staff to manage restricted and unrestricted contributed or granted funds, ensuring proper accounting and reporting.
- Supervise accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and professional development. Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment with the accounting team.
- Assume all other responsibilities as deemed necessary or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field with 3-5 years of related experience is required.
- MBA or CPA certification and prior experience with annual audit management is preferred.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people with prior supervisory experience preferred.
- Current knowledge and understanding of regulations, industry trends, current practices, new developments, and applicable laws regarding finance and accounting.
