Technician
What is the opportunity?
SWIG is a Water Mission owned, Christian social business that operates and maintains safe water solutions for people in developing countries, refugee camps and disaster areas. As an employee of Safe water Infrastructure Group Initiative (SWIG) , the Technician is responsible for developing a biblical worldview culture that leads to God-honoring excellence in all work and reinforces the following: providing accurate data, empowering staff to have the skills and mindset needed to acknowledge mistakes or problems as opportunities to find appropriate solutions, and consistently work for excellence in solutions that are consistent with Water Mission’s mission, vision, values, and standards.
Job Summary: Under the direction of the Utility Engineer, the Technician – is responsible for performing the duties and tasks as outlined below. This is a full-time position and requires that the person resides near the SWIG office and travels to remote locations within Luuka district. This role will focus on ensuring sustainable operation and maintenance as well as extension of distribution points in communities where safe water projects are implemented by Water Mission.
Status: Full-Time-Fixed Term Contract
General responsibilities
- Maintain a strong Christian witness and model servant leadership to colleagues, donors, partners, volunteers the communities we serve, and the public.

Key duties and responsibilities

Documentation and reporting
- Help build and manage required key capacities of water system operators, including refresher training of operators and orientation of new operators.
- Manage the process of submitting funding requests for work, ensure accurate documentation and tracking, and provide detailed accounting and reconciliation of funds after the work is complete.
- Conduct analysis and reports regularly on water quality tests and other tests.
- Maintain documentation of work activities, prepare regular reports on progress and outcomes, and ensure timely submission of all required documentation to the supervisor.

Troubleshooting
- Monitor, report, and rectify any issues arising during the operation of the water systems, including the monitoring system and pre-paid meters.
- Be part of an on-call rotation to respond to system outages during weekends, working collaboratively with the team to ensure timely resolutions, which may include in-person support if necessary.

Minor Repairs
- Carry out minor repairs on pumps, solar panels, water treatment systems, storage tanks, distribution lines, tap stands, household connections, and general electrical and plumbing works or any components of the water system.

Major Repairs
- Supervise contractors to carry out major repairs.

Extensions of Household Distribution Points
- Install and/or supervise the connection of On-Premises Connections, including but not limited to, excavation of the trenches, connecting to the water main, installing the service line, fitting of the water meter and appurtenances, installing the splash pad, and coordinating with the homeowner.

Other duties as assigned.
Education Qualification and Experience
- Diploma in Water Engineering from a recognized or reputable institution.
- Minimum of 1 year of practical experience in solar piped water schemes
- General competence and experience in hands on masonry ,plumbing and electro mechanical works.
- Competent with an office computer and smart phone (Word, Excel, GPS, mobile data collection tools).

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Lusoga languages.
- Excellent analytical ability and process troubleshooting skills.

- Must be standards and detail-oriented with an ability to plan.
- A strong work ethic.
- Ability and willingness to travel for fieldwork.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Legal authorization to work in Uganda.
