SUMMARY:  The Tax Accountant will be part of VSE Corporate Tax team and is expected to successfully manage multiple, simultaneous assignments, deadlines, priorities, and tasks. This position is responsible for applying tax laws, regulations, and accounting principles to analyze financial information, prepare accurate and timely income tax provisions, tax returns, tax payments, income tax accounting entries, and ensure appropriate adherence to corporate accounting policies and related internal controls. Responsibilities consistently require a strong attention to detail, tax technical analysis, communication, and a level of independent organization and prioritization of responsibilities. 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare federal, state, and local income tax returns, including return workpaper, tax adjustment calculations, state nexus and apportionment analysis, and quarterly estimates and extensions.
  • Prepare indirect tax returns, including sales tax, property tax, gross receipts tax, unclaimed property, and other returns.
  • Assist with the quarterly and annual tax provision calculation, supporting analysis and tax disclosures for quarterly and annual SEC filings.
  • Maintain and review tax-basis fixed assets.
  • Responsible for keeping track and assisting with all income and indirect tax notices, audits, and controversies.
  • Maintain overall tax calendar and timing of all filings and due dates.
  • Assist with maintenance of SOX internal controls and reporting.
  • Conduct in-depth tax research and provide support for business unit accounting teams.
  • Work closely with other members of the team both internally and externally to gather information timely for all income tax and indirect tax related items.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited four-year college or university or related fieldor an additional 4 years of relevant work experience in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years of diverse tax experience in direct and indirect corporate tax area.
  • Experience using income tax software.
  • Superior attention to detail with strong organizational, analytical, and planning skills.
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge and skills in a wide variety of applications, Thomson Reuters software experience a plus.
  • Good interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Research orientated with problem-solving skills.
  • Positive attitude and ability to work collaboratively with team in various levels.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with ability to multitask and complete assignments within time constraints and deadlines.
  • Public accounting experience.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • CPA certification.
