SUMMARY: The Non-Metallic Engineer is responsible for supporting design engineering in the design, use, and manufacture of plastic and elastomeric parts. Design/manufacturing experience with engine/APU/aircraft fuel systems and/or accessories is an asset.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assessing the suitability of non-metallic materials such as composites, polymers, and ceramics for various aircraft components based on factors like strength, weight, corrosion resistance, thermal stability, and fuel compatibility.
  • Ensuring that non-metallic components comply with internal and industry specifications.
  • Monitoring the performance and durability of non-metallic components throughout their lifecycle, including in-service inspections, maintenance, and repairs. They may also investigate incidents of component failure or degradation to implement preventive measures.
  • Engaging with industry to stay current on the latest test methods, specifications, and practices. Engaging in research initiatives to explore new materials, manufacturing techniques, and design concepts that could enhance the performance and efficiency of non-metallic aircraft components.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, material science engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or related field.
  • 5 years of materials engineering experience in the aviation industry, preferably with an aerospace manufacturer.
  • OR an additional 3 years of materials engineering experience in lieu of degree.
  • Knowledge and expertise with the design and manufacture of plastic and elastomeric parts including O-rings, diaphragms, gaskets, etc. And their suitability for use in aviation fuels.
  • Knowledgeable with the manufacture/compounding of fluorosilicone, fluorocarbon, nitrile elastomers.
  • Knowledgeable with the manufacture of fabric re-enforced elastomeric diaphragms.
  • Work with suppliers to address material obsolescence and supply issues.
  • Support failure analysis and investigation.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • 9+ years of materials science experience within the aviation industry.
  • Engagement on relevant ASTM committees.
  • Manufacturing experience with engine/APU/aircraft fuel systems and/or accessories
