Director, Human Resources

Position Description

 

Department:    Human Resources

Reports To:     President

Location:         Support Center, Solana Beach, CA

Classification: Exempt 

 

Position Summary:

The Director, Human Resources will plan, lead, direct, develop, and coordinate the policies, activities, and Human Resources Team, ensuring legal compliance and implementation of the Company’s mission and talent strategy.  The Director, Human Resources sets the tone for building a culture that has a profoundly positive impact on all Our People.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with senior leadership to understand the Company’s goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention.
  • Plans, leads, develops, coordinates, and implements policies, processes, training, initiatives, and surveys to support the organization’s human resource compliance and strategy needs.
  • Administers or oversees the administration of human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety (including workers’ compensation); and HR training and development. 
  • Identifies staffing and recruiting needs; develops and executes best practices for hiring and talent management.
  • Conducts research and analysis of organizational trends including review of reports and metrics from the organization’s human resource information system (HRIS) or talent management system. 
  • Monitors and ensures the organization’s compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance. 
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law; applies this knowledge to communicate changes in policy, practice, and resources to upper management.
  • Manages and helps resolve employee relations issues.
  • Establishes credibility throughout the organization with management and Team Members to be an effective listener and problem solver of people issues. 
  • Develops and implements departmental budget. 
  • Facilitates professional development, training, and certification activities for HR (Human Resources) staff.
  • Regular and reliable in-person attendance required

Job Qualifications

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, or related field required.  SHRM-SCP/CP and/or SPHR/PHR designation preferred

Experience:  Minimum five years of progressive human resource management required.  Hospitality or restaurant work experience preferred.  Or any similar combination of education and experience.  Experience using Ceridian Dayforce preferred. 

Knowledge:  Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or Google Suite preferred. 

Language Skills:  Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills required. Bilingual Spanish preferred.

Other Skills:  Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and negotiation skills required.  Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.  Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.  Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.  Strong supervisory and leadership skills. 

Other Abilities: Ability to adapt to the needs of the organization and its Team.  Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.  Ability to communicate with all Team Members and to maintain confidentiality.  Ability to work under time constraints and handle multiple priorities.  Ability to compose detailed and professional correspondence.  Requires the highest level of integrity, ethics, and business judgment.  Ability to provide organizational leadership and foster a Team environment.  

Major Business/Professional Contacts

Regular contact with Support Center Team Members, Executive Team Members, and restaurant Team Members.  Occasional contact with vendors.

Working and Environmental Conditions

Typically functions in an office environment.  Requires working closely with co-workers and Team Members for long periods of time.  Occasionally travels to restaurant locations via car or airplane, up to 25% of the time, or as needed.  

Physical Demands

Requires sitting at a desk for extended periods of time.  Requires time in front of a computer screen for extended periods of time.  Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs.
