Position Summary:

The WIC Nutrition Assistant I is a temporary position contingent on the completion of a WNA certificate from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) after 9 months of being hired. The Nutrition Assistant I attends trainings and practices eligibility determination, nutrition assessments, counseling, and teaching classes. Upon receiving the WNA certificate the Nutrition Assistant I will transition to the Nutrition Assistant II job title.

 

Essential Functions of the Job:

Nutrition Services 40%

  • Complete nutrition services-related assignments for pregnant, postpartum people, infants, and children.
  • Practice the following for pregnant, postpartum people, infants, and children:
    • Group and one on one nutrition and breastfeeding education.
    • Breast pump issuance according to program policies and procedures.
    • Referring high risk participants to the appropriate nutritionist.
    • Prescribing WIC food benefits (tailor food packages based on the nutrition and health assessment).
    • Scheduling participants appropriately.
    • Providing referrals as needed to applicants and participants.
  • Demonstrate nutrition services related knowledge and application to a Registered Dietitian.

 

Case Management: 30 %

  • Complete case management assignments for pregnant, postpartum people, infants, and children.
  • Practice the following for pregnant, postpartum people, infants, and children:
    • Nutrition and breastfeeding need assessment.
    • Establish goals during each Certification and Re-Certification appointment.
    • Follow up on goals during each follow up appointment.
  • Demonstrate case management related knowledge and application to a Registered Dietitian.

 

Client Services: 25 %

  • Complete client services-related assignments for pregnant, postpartum people, infants, and children.
  • Practice the following for pregnant, postpartum people, infants, and children:
    • Determining WIC program eligibility.
    • Educating participants on non-nutrition program items such as program orientation.
    • Collecting anthropometric and biochemical data.
    • Conducting call reminders and reschedule missed appointments.
    • Issuing WIC cards and food benefits.
  • Demonstrate client services related knowledge and application to a Registered Dietitian.

 

Other WIC Support Services: 5%

  • Assist with filing and data storage.
  • Participate in program linkages, referral, and outreach activities.
  • Demonstrate openness to organizational changes.
  • Actively seek ways to improve processes.

 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
  • Attends meetings as required and participates in committees as directed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or requested.

Job Requirements


Experience Required:

  • 1 year of administrative/clerical experience.

 

Education Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent. 

 

Certifications Required:

  • WIC Nutrition Assistant Certificate within nine months of being hired, required.

 

Verbal and Written Skills Required to Perform the Job:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

 

Technical Knowledge and Skills Required to Perform the Job:

  • Computer proficiency, including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to work well with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. 

 

Equipment Used:

  • General office Equipment to include Personal Computer, Phones, Fax, etc.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and walking.
  • May require the ability to move up to 20 lbs. with proper equipment.
  • Noisy clinic environment with young children and infants.
  • Schedule will require some Saturdays and evenings; May need to travel and work at other SY Health WIC sites during work hours (reliable transportation required).

 

Universal Requirements:

Pre-employment requirements include I-9, physical, positive background and reference check results, complete application, new hire orientation, pre-employment PPDs. Compliance with all mandated vaccinations and all boosters is a term and condition of employment.
