Job Summary: 

Under general supervision, undertakes and performs a variety of tasks associated with curriculum and lesson plan development.  Provides one-to one and small group classroom setting instruction and related educational services to juveniles held in the Eric County Youth Detention Program.  Responsible for providing appropriate learning experiences for student with learning, emotional and behavioral disabilities.

  1. Identifies, recommends and develops general to specialized curriculum and related educational programs; develops lesson plans, tests, evaluation instruments and related items. 
  2. Provides direct teaching and learning opportunities to detainees at the Secure Youth Detention Center; works with students; identifies appropriate grade level instruction; works with students in learning, developing an educational skill and in related areas; provides group and as required, one-to-one assistance to the students.
  3. Researches, identifies and recommends books and related teaching materials
  4.  Administers regents exams.
  5.  Identifies, designs, administers, collects and reviews daily and longer-term assignments; works with site supervisor and others regarding individual and/or collective student’s needs. 
  6. Oversees and provides instruction on computer use and operation; provides guidance and assistance related to computer operations and computer-related education; assists students with obtaining student-specific educational needs.
  7. Creates an educational climate that promotes success, independence, a productive atmosphere, and provides students with encouragement, engagement, safety and stimulation.
  8. Assists with the creation of effective behavior management techniques or plans.
  9. Maintain client confidentiality with HIPPA/FERPA and other agency and/or facility guidelines.
  10. Prepares/implements lessons and other instructional materials to meet individual needs of students based on their Individual Education Plan(IEP)
  11. Demonstrate adequate knowledge of subject matter, critical and creative thinking and individualized instruction.
  12. Communicate effectively with Detention personnel and other community based organizations regarding student progress and/or needs as required.
  13. Any other duty as assigned by your Supervisor.

Skills:

Knowledge of the specific curriculum content to deliver at appropriate instructional levels.

Knowledge of principles of educating youth with mental health and/or emotional and behavioral challenges.

Knowledge of Individual Education Programs

Knowledge of the principals of student management and supervision

Knowledge of the principals of files and records management

Knowledge of trends and practices in adolescent education

Skills in assessing, evaluating, prioritizing and handling multiple tasks, projects and demands.

Skills in working within deadlines to complete projects and assignments

Skills in assessing, analyzing, identifying and recommending solutions to problems

Skills in producing written reports for internal and external audiences

Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, other County employees, representatives of other governmental agencies and others having business with the courts of Erie County.

Skills in computer operations utilizing a variety of commonly used and specialized applications

 

Minimum Education Required: 

Bachelor’s degree in Education.  Must obtain Master’s degree per NYSED guidelines

 

 

Minimum Experience Required:

Previous experience working within a secure detention environment preferred, but not required. 

 

 

License/Registration/ Certifications Required:

New York State certification for specified teaching discipline (English, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, social Studies and Special Education) within 6 months of start date.

Physical Requirements:

May be required to lift and/or carry heavy, bulky items, equipment, supplies and/or other materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
