Job Purpose/Scope:
Reporting to the Maintenance Superintendent, the primary focus of the Maintenance Engineer is to provide engineering support to the Maintenance Department in the repair and modification of existing equipment, buildings, and grounds by developing the scope of repair work, for specifying and managing the installation of capital projects to improve plant equipment and processes, and for implementing the preventive maintenance program and procedures to maximize equipment reliability. Secondary focus is to apply engineering concepts to safely optimize equipment, procedures, and departmental budgets to achieve better maintainability, reliability, and availability of equipment.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
Essential Functions
30% Specify, design, and manage the installation of capital projects to improve plant equipment and processes for increased productivity and reduced operating costs. Develop capital cost justifications to support improvements and modifications to ensure proper support for manufacturing processes.
30% Responsible for developing, documenting, and improving preventive maintenance programs in order to support the improvement of equipment availability and throughput. Analyze repetitive equipment failures, identify root causes, make recommendations, implement corrective actions, and develop long term equipment reliability programs. Work in the CMMS system to continually improve PM effectiveness, accuracy, and frequency based off of Mean Time Between Failure and other KPIs.
15% Provide technical assistant to Maintenance personnel during troubleshooting and equipment repair.
10% Forecast spare parts requirements. Working with Tool Room to correlate min/max on parts by developing critical equipment list in CMMS, providing feedback from EM, PM, and CM parts usage, developing history on equipment and parts usage.
10% Assess the need, timing, and cost for equipment upgrades, rebuilds, and replacements and make recommendations.
5% Coordinate with other engineering resources, operations, maintenance personnel, and outside contractors to schedule and manage projects.
Secondary Functions
- Assists Maintenance Supervisor to plan, schedule, and supervise services internally for the Maintenance, Machine Shop, and Engineering departments, as well as procure outside contractors/vendors to maintain facility auxiliary systems, such as HVAC, Boilers, Propane/CNG systems, CO2 & Halon systems, emergency generators, and the Fire Protection system.
- Assists with maintaining the work order system and participate in safety, environmental, and ISO audits.
- Performs those administrative activities necessary, including provision for selection and development of employees’ safety, employee counseling and motivation, organization goals and objectives, and planning, organizing, integrating, and measuring the work performed within the plant. Promotes lean, quality, and team concepts.
Knowledge/Experience/Skills:

- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering

- 3 years of experience working in a manufacturing, maintenance environment in an engineering or maintenance support role. A combination of education and applicable experience may be considered.
