Senior Coordinator, HSI Wild Animals

The general salary range for the position is $58,000 - 68,000. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Senior Coordinator, Wild Animals for its Affiliate, Humane Society International (HSI).  This position is responsible for implementing and managing key wildlife campaigns and initiatives including gaining policy protections for priority wild species on a national and international level, liaising with external policy stakeholders including government officials, managing our Don’t Buy Wild campaign, overseeing tasks such as organizing stakeholder workshops and leading the coordination of our department’s communication efforts.

Responsibilities:

• Coordinating with HSI’s Wildlife department and country offices, creating and implementing strategies for advancing the protection of wild animals through advocacy and policy adoption and implementation for priority species such as hippos on the national and international level including conducting strategic planning and research as necessary;
• Developing and maintaining relationships and liaising with relevant NGOs, scientists, and government officials including through stakeholder workshops to facilitate the achievement of legislative and/or regulatory reforms for priority species through policy such as CITES listings and ESA petitions;
• Coordinating with the HSI Wildlife team, analyzing and advocating for and/or against policies and regulations at meetings of international multilateral environmental agreements, such as CITES, and providing guidance and support for like-minded government delegates for achievement of critical goals;
• Overseeing and implementing our Don’t Buy Wild campaign to further organizational objectives to reduce demand for wildlife products and helping to develop and implementing other wildlife protection campaigns;
•Drafting copy for internal (across affiliates and country offices) and external (public facing) communications including social media, action alerts, and petitions, and responds to requests for review, analysis, and information as well as supporter inquiries;
•Providing supervision, guidance, and mentorship for consultants and interns and assisting with developing procedures, responding to applications, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, work assignments, and performance evaluations;
• Other duties as assigned by the Senior Director and Vice President of the Wildlife team. 

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in public policy, Biology, Environmental Studies, or another related field, or equivalent work experience, required;
• A minimum of five (5) years of experience as an employee or intern in international wildlife campaigns, policy, wildlife management or a related field required;
• Excellent communication (written and oral) skills with the ability to translate information into a meaningful, understandable context and message across various cultures;
• Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as the ability to handle complex situations and demonstrate sound judgment and problem-solving;
• Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills with demonstrated flexibility and the ability to manage multiple and often changing priorities and issues of varying complexity, while meeting time sensitive deadlines and deliverables;
• Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member;
• Willing and able to travel;
• Ability to debate controversial topics relating to wildlife protection;
• Ability to speak another language in addition to English required, fluency in French preferred.
