Senior Strategist, Regulatory Science
The general salary range for the position is $93,000 - 112,000. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Senior Strategist, Regulatory Science for its Affiliate, Humane Society International (HSI). This position provides scientific support for global and regional staff in the HSI Research & Toxicology program with regulatory science remits, as well as related external projects, with the aim of accelerating a paradigm shift away from animal testing for medicines (drugs), vaccines and biologicals.
This position will be responsible for:
• Providing scientific expertise to support policy efforts across the global HSI Research & Toxicology program with accurate, timely, and persuasive scientific evidence to. This includes development of analyses, reports, publications, webinars, workshops, and other technical resources as needed to support HSI policy and communications, as well as responding to external commenting opportunities and technical enquiries, in close collaboration with country and program leads;
• Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of relevant developments in relation to non-animal animal testing method and approaches, e.g. via the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, regional pharmacopeias and other international bodies and communicates relevant information about these developments to HSI’s global research and toxicology team;
• Serving as an HSI scientific spokesperson for media, conferences, workshops, webinars, expert committees, governmental and other events, as needed;
• Assisting with the organization, promotion and administration of periodic scientific workshops and other research and toxicology events;
• Supporting research and toxicology non-technical personnel, as needed;
• Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• A PhD or other professional degree in biology, toxicology or related field or equivalent work experience required;
• A minimum of five (5) years of experience in a relevant scientific field required;
• Experience with regulatory frameworks for medicines, vaccines and biologicals, biomedical sciences, chemicals and other regulator products;
• Commitment to animal protection issues and the ability to professionally advocate for HSI science-policy positions;
• Ability to work and multitask in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; self-motivated and proactive;
• Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as the ability to handle complex situations and exercise sound judgment and problem-solving;
• Strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to prioritize responsibilities and motivate external partners meet deadlines;
• Strong communications (oral and written) and interpersonal skills, including the ability to quickly absorb, analyze and communicate complex subject matter to a variety of audiences;
• Proven ability to build/foster relationships with diverse stakeholder groups, demonstrating high standards of tact, diplomacy and discretion;
• Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team;
• Technical proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, Planner, etc.);
• The ability to work long hours should a crisis situation arise;
• Willing and able to travel, as needed.
