The general salary range for this position is $58,000 - 68,000. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training, and education.
    
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal advocacy organization, is seeking an Outreach Specialist – Puppy Mills for the Companion Animals department.  In this position you will coordinate education and grassroots outreach in support of the Stop Puppy Mills campaign’s priorities and to help empower the next generation of advocates who work on the puppy mill issue. Provides support for the team’s research initiatives by gathering, organizing and reviewing a large volume of information from state and local agencies on dog sellers, which is used to assist in the development of investigations, reports, and exposes.

You will be responsible for:

• Acting as a liaison with local puppy mill groups, members of the public, and rescues and shelters to build support for the campaign and to build collaboration on key initiatives, based on strategic goals of the campaign and organization;
• Assisting with key research-based investigations and reports by gathering and organizing public records from government oversight agencies, such as inspection reports, photographs, and animal transport documents, reviewing such records for relevance and newsworthiness, fact-checking and reviewing related information, and collecting and responding to puppy buyer complaints;
• Assisting in encouraging and training a new generation of anti-puppy mill advocates by supplying educational materials, support, and advice to budding advocates, helping to unite individuals with similar goals, and findings ways to direct their advocacy toward the most strategic and impactful projects;
• Identifying ways for our educational message to penetrate new audiences, such as responsible breeder groups, youth groups, schools, and online communities (social media);
• Working with consumers to gather information on puppy mills, pet stores and sick puppy complaints and helps advise the public on issues such as how to find a responsible source when getting a pet;
• Assisting the senior director in developing presentations and other outreach;
• Performing other duties or responsibilities, as assigned. 

 Qualifications and Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree required;
• A minimum of three (3) years of experience in nonprofit activism in a leadership capacity, or in a related animal welfare position (can be volunteer) required;
• Knowledge of animal protection issues, especially canine welfare issues;
• Strong research and organization skills;
• Proficiency of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook);
• Demonstrated ability in developing and delivering communication to members at various levels within an organization;
• Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with team members and stakeholders at all levels;
• Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
