Sustainability Consultant III
Henderson Engineers is seeking a Sustainability Consultant III to join their organization. A Sustainability Consultant III specializes in energy and climate and helps to guide the decarbonization of buildings and the transformation of energy systems. They work to identify innovative solutions for energy efficiency, electrification, and clean energy adoption, supporting the transition to net-zero energy systems. They engage directly with clients and provide insight into achieving climate and sustainability goals across building portfolios.
Minimum Qualifications for the Role are:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, construction management, building science, or a closely related field required. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in complex mechanical engineering projects, sustainability consulting, energy efficiency, and/or decarbonization.
- Certification in one or more of the following highly preferred: Certified Decarbonization Professional (CDP), Certified
- Energy Manager (CEM), Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP), LEED AP, Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP), or Commissioning Authority (CxA).
- Technical expertise in building decarbonization, retrofit measures, renewable energy, and energy infrastructure.
- Knowledge of building design, construction processes, and building operations.
- Proficiency in energy modeling tools (e.g., IES, eQuest,) and software programs.
- Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Excel and data visualization to manipulate model inputs and analyze results.
- Thorough knowledge of state and city building performance standards, energy codes, and standards (e.g., ASHRAE,Title 24).
- Experience using climate data to create models for climate scenario analysis and set science-based targets for clients.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical analysis into clear, actionable insights.
- Must demonstrate proficiency in all core competencies as described and characterized in this job description.
Skills and Duties you will be Responsible for while in this role:
Decarbonization & Sustainability Consulting:
- Participate in initiatives focused on decarbonizing buildings, energy systems, and infrastructure to support the transition from fossil fuel dependency to net-zero energy use.
- Research and document innovative sustainability and decarbonization methods.
- Participate in collaboration with building owners, architects, and engineers to achieve sustainability goals.
Project Management & Client Engagement:
- Participate in the planning, development, and execution of sustainability projects to help ensure successful delivery.
- Develop client relationship skills and the ability to guide them through the energy consulting process and supplying sustainability roadmaps that align with their goals.
Building & Decarbonization Performance Analysis:

- Conduct energy performance and GHG analyses using advanced modeling tools to provide insights into building efficiency and decarbonization methods.
- Refine decarbonization models to assess client strategies for reducing emissions and evaluate environmental benefits.
- Update models based on evolving state, local, and federal climate policies.
Team Leadership:

- Stay informed on emerging sustainability concepts and frameworks and make recommendations for the implementation of best practices.
- Foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace that promotes respect and collaboration across the workforce.
Technical Reporting & Thought Leadership:

- Assist with writing external-facing reports detailing sustainability objectives and energy modeling results.
- Collaborate closely with internal teams to ensure that all analyses are aligned with client sustainability goals.
- Grow expertise through writing blogs and engaging in knowledge-sharing activities.
Policy & Market Analysis:
- Participate in performing quantitative analyses, forecasting, and modeling to evaluate the impact of energy policies on emissions, energy demand, and associated costs.
- Translate these results into clear visual representations for client presentations and public reports.
