Equipment Operator Trainee I/II CDL - Stormwater Utility
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Equipment Operator Trainee/I/II (EO Trainee/I/II) position involves manual work in the performance of various tasks and projects to improve drainage and flood control within Abilene. This position requires work experience in the safe and efficient operation and minor servicing of construction and maintenance equipment. This is a preparatory position to prepare the Stormwater employee for increased responsibility in the field of drainage operations. On-the-job training to prepare the individual for this position is anticipated and will be conducted at the Stormwater Maintenance Supervisor’s discretion.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position exercises no supervision.
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Equipment Operator Trainee, I
Conducts operation and maintenance duties on creeks, drainage ways and other stormwater infrastructure utilizing skid steer, vac trailer, boom truck and other relevant equipment.
Performs street sweeping operations and herbicide application using street sweepers.
Operates agriculture-type tractor mowers with shredder mower deck and/or zero-turn mowers.
Operates pickup/utility trucks, 3 to 16 cubic yard dump trucks, and water trucks.
Use chain/pole saws, wood shredders and line trimmers.
Participate in concrete repair and rehabilitation projects as well as installation of new concrete drainage ways.
Maintains creek bed using various light and small equipment including hand tools used in general operation and maintenance as required.
Perform minor preventative maintenance servicing to assigned equipment and promptly reports mechanical or other problems.
Performs on-call services and attends to after hour emergency situations, when necessary.
Equipment Operator II
Duties and equipment use as listed under Equipment Operator I.
Perform advanced operation and maintenance assignments using the following equipment:
a. Boom/Crane Truck
b. Wheel Loader
c. Skid Steer
d. Tracked Excavator
OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES
Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
General operation and servicing of light construction equipment and hand tools.
Work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operations.
Safe driving principles and practices.
Skill to:
Use, operate and care for a variety of tools, machinery, and equipment used in the area of work assigned.
Safely operate a motor vehicle and associated equipment.
Ability to:
Perform minor equipment maintenance repairs.
Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
Make minor operating adjustments and recognize operating deficiencies in assigned equipment.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:
For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Equipment Operator Trainee
Experience:
This is an entry level position. Previous work experience in the safe and efficient operation and minor servicing of light and medium construction and maintenance equipment is preferred.
Education/Training:
A high school diploma or GED is required.
License or Certificate:
A valid Class B Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment is required.
Equipment Operator I
Experience:
Previous work experience in the safe and efficient operation and minor servicing of light and medium construction and maintenance equipment is required.
Education/Training:
A high school diploma or GED is required.
License or Certificate:
A valid Class B Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required.
Equipment Operator II
Experience:
Two (2) years of work experience in the safe and efficient operation and minor servicing of light and medium construction and maintenance equipment as outlined in the Important and Essential Duties is required.
Working knowledge of maintenance operation performed in creeks and drainage structures, which include:
a. Shooting grade
b. Cutting to grade
c. Setting forms and working concrete.
d. Basic welding skills.
Education/Training:
A high school diploma or a GED is required.
License or Certificate:
A current Class A or Class B Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required.
Non-Commercial Herbicide Applicator License from Texas Department of Agriculture is preferred.
Special Requirements:
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
Exposure to noise, outdoors, wet weather, vibration, chemicals, and mechanical hazards.
Ability to travel to different work sites and be available after work hours.
Ability to safely traverse steep grades often found in creeks and drainage ways.
