Divisional Communications Director
Location: The Florida Division – Lutz, Florida
About this opportunity:
Plans, develops, coordinates, maintains, and improves the day-to-day divisional communication operations with the purpose of improving both internal and public awareness and support for programs and services that advance the Army’s mission. Plans, develops, coordinates with the Digital Marketing & Web Administrator on digital marketing strategy. Provides the capacity to enhance evangelism, strengthen community relations, provide better public information, forge stronger media relations, and in general raise the standards of communications assistance around the division. Designs, develops and presents promotional materials using multi-media formats; supports local Command staff responsible for serving as a liaison with the media with regard to the promotion of Salvation Army events, services, disaster relief, etc. Develops and maintains an effective communication plan to manage the Army’s image as well as any adverse public relations events and keeps internal and external audiences informed on Salvation Army activity during disaster and/or crises events.
Key responsibilities:
- Plans, develops, coordinates, evaluates and improves the communication functions for the Division with a goal of increasing public awareness of, and support for, the mission of The Salvation Army; develops and manages an Annual Communications Improvement Plan outlining the strategies, objectives and measurable outcomes of the Divisional communications practices.
- Monitors, prepares, aggregates and disseminates internal and external news and press releases in both written and electronic formats; shares news with the entire division and THQ, secular and Christian media; ensuring this is accomplished with the goal of integration of a common identity.
- Monitors information relevant to The Salvation Army on Social Media and determines official messages to post in order protect, support or enhance the Army’s image and mission. This includes the daily monitoring of activity, and the management of appropriate social media accounts like but not limited to Facebook and Twitter accounts. This is especially acute when on disaster service within the division.
- Provides oversight and direction in coordinating digital fundraising strategy for the division relating to online fundraising which would include Classy, Peer to Peer, Emails and other digital platforms.
- Serves as the divisional PIO when required and manages all functional pubic information section specialists to accomplish internal and external objectives. Ensures there are adequate candidates who have taken the PIO course to assist when necessary. Is available to serve at a moment’s notice when disaster strikes the division. Ensures the field units understand the importance of reporting activity or preparedness when disaster is about to strike. Writes effective media releases and posts them to the national EDS website in a timely manner.
What we are looking for in you:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Public Relations, Communications, or a related field is required with a Masters Preferred
- Five years progressively responsible experience administering a variety of internal and external communications functions for a large organization
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills or abilities
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Ability to meet attendance requirements Ability to read, write, and communicate well the English language. Ability to serve as a spokesperson for The Salvation Army in print, on radio, and television, and speak before large groups in person. Ability to travel to various locations in order to participate in public meetings, conferences, etc.
Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking. Work is ordinarily performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like. Occasional Disaster site and mission field visits where extreme conditions could be experienced. This may require working remotely in impacted areas where accommodations could be less than ideal. Requires regular travel within the Division as well as the occasional need to visit other divisions or THQ.
