Position Type:     Casual

Pay Range:         $15.00 - $18.00

About this opportunity:

  • Performs a wide variety of support functions to ensure the safety, security, comfort and wellbeing of Salvation Army emergency shelter clients. Ensures shelter clients adhere to house rules. Monitors building security. Performs light housekeeping duties to ensure orderly, clean common areas. Serves as a lead worker to Shelter Residential Aides. Responsible for entering shelter client information into a database. Typically works a non-traditional schedule of evening and overnight shifts.

Key responsibilities:

  • Supports inclement weather shelter operating procedures to include preparing sleeping and dining areas prior to shelter opening, assisting with the intake procedure, cot assignments, distributing blankets, face masks, and maintaining an orderly check-in line.
  • Follows Salvation Army client intake procedure. Conducts and/or ensures a shelter census is taken at prescribed times. Ensures all clients are accounted for when they exit the shelter.
  • Assists Shelter Program Manager with program reporting and tracking metrics.
  • Maintains clean, orderly condition of shelter common areas such as the entrance lobby, restrooms, lounge, dining room, hallways. Empties trash cans and replaces trash liners.

What we are looking for in you:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.; AND
  • One year experience performing security or social service work preferred; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to respond to emergency situations quickly and calmly while maintaining control and initiating the proper corrective action. Ability to perform combinations of sitting, standing, and walking on a frequent change basis.  Distance of travel is usually within the same building. Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time. Work is performed in a shelter facility where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
