Controller
Position Summary:
The Controller is a key leadership role within Albright College’s Business and Finance Office, responsible for the overall management and oversight of the College’s financial operations. Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Administration (VPFA), the Controller will ensure the integrity of financial reporting, compliance with regulatory standards, and effective management of financial resources to support the College’s mission.
The Controller will lead a dedicated team, foster strong internal controls, and promote a culture of continuous improvement and fiscal responsibility. This role requires a detail-oriented, hands-on financial professional with a deep understanding of non-profit accounting, higher education finance, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Oversight and Reporting
- Manage the College’s accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and financial reporting.
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, reports, and analyses for internal and external stakeholders.
- Oversee the annual audit process and ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Lead the preparation and submission of required federal, state, and local financial reports, including IRS Form 990.
Budgeting and Financial Planning
- Collaborate with the VPFA and other departments to develop and monitor the annual operating and capital budgets.
- Provide financial analysis and forecasting to support strategic decision-making and resource allocation.
Compliance and Internal Controls
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard the College’s assets and ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Ensure compliance with donor restrictions, grant requirements, and endowment management policies.
Team Leadership and Development
- Supervise and mentor a team of accounting and finance professionals, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
- Provide training and professional development opportunities to staff to maintain a high level of expertise.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred; MBA or advanced degree a plus).
- Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, preferably in a non-profit or higher education environment.
- Demonstrated leadership and management experience in financial operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Deep knowledge of non-profit accounting standards (FASB), GAAP, and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Experience with Ellucian Colleague a plus.
- Proficiency in financial management software and ERP systems; experience with systems implementation is a plus.
- Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex financial information to non-financial audiences.
