Swim Team Coach

- Create thorough, age-appropriate workouts focusing on technique, endurance, stroke development, drills and within the YMCA guidelines or as directed by the Aquatic Director
- Lead structured practices during assigned times as allocated by the Aquatic Director
- Record all work-outs and track daily attendance as outlined by the Aquatic Director and in compliance with best practices as outlined in YMCA and national certifications
- Manage all administration of the team as assigned including swim meet arrangements, entry assignments, and registrations
- Maintain open communication with parents and promote an environment that focuses on the development of the swimmer and cultivates relationships that create a collaborative swim team environment within YMCA philosophy, rules, guidelines, and policies
- Coordinate and run swim team competitions, meet registrations, and record maintenance
- Attend all swim team events, parent meetings, and special events
- Assist in swim team social event planning, as necessary;
- Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment for swim team participants;
- Builds effective, authentic relationships with swimmers and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
- Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
- Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, best practices, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Maintain a neat environment and secures team equipment at the end of practice/meets. Reports damaged equipment.
- Trains and supervises assistant coaches, aides, and volunteers as assigned.
- Assists in all areas as assigned and completes assignments as directed by supervisor.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Current AHSI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent course from American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or National Safety Council). Any BLS certification is good for only one year.
- 2+ years of experience as competitive swimmer preferred
- 2+ years of coaching experience preferred
- Must be able to demonstrate proficiency of swim skills in accordance with YMCA standards and have a strong foundation in stroke mechanics and be able to communicate effectively with swimmers and parents
- Will be required to secure and maintain any certifications as outlined by the Aquatic Director and YMCA of South Hampton Roads. These certifications could include: YMCA and/or national coaching certifications, safety certifications, leadership certifications / training, and certifications that may be required by national organizations in order for the team or swimmers to compete in events at the local, regional, or national levels.
- Ability to instruct, observe, and demonstrate to participants proper stroke and competitive swim techniques
- Ability to lift and pull equipment 50 pounds, and to lift a small to average size child.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Must be in good physical condition to teach classes
- Must have ability to work inside and outside (i.e. humidity, hot, cold, inclement weather conditions)
- Must have ability to concentrate in a loud environment
