POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Regional Youth Development Director, the Youth Development Director is responsible for providing Cause-Driven leadership to before and after school care, summer camp,  School's Out camp and teen programs. The Youth Development Director also assumes a leadership role in the annual support campaign.  Day to day operations include staff supervision, fiscal control, program development, program area facility management/maintenance, marketing, and volunteer management.  The Youth Development Director is also responsible for hiring, training and supervising and leading their staff team in superior levels of member service and engagement in accordance with the Association's operating standards

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Division of Duties

  • 60% supervision and management of licensed child care programs
  • 15% supervision and management of teen programs
  • 15% supervision and management of Stay & Play and Interactive Zone
  • 10% leadership to Annual Giving and other association/department initiatives

Priorities:

  • Provides supervision and management to all licensed child care programs, including, Before and After School, Summer Camp and School’s Out
  • Provides supervision and management to Stay & Play, Interactive Zone and Teen programs
  • Ensures all program operations are consistent with association procedures, including emergency, insurance, accident, purchasing, personnel, accounting and other administrative systems
  • Maintains state license for camp programs and ensures the YMCA is in compliance for state inspections of facility   

The Youth Development Director must understand and be willing to learn the necessary skills required for the successful completion of duties including:

  1. Budget and Financial Performance

    1. Develops and manages the budgets related to the position
    2. Assists with Child Care Open Doors applications and renewals and adhere to YMCA standards and policies
  2. Program Development and Membership Engagement

    1. Creates opportunities for members to form small communities and build meaningful relationships
    2. Provides strong leadership and support for attaining goals and objectives of the Association Strategic Plan
    3. Expands current Youth Development offerings with high quality programming in accordance with the Association operating guidelines
  3. Team Performance Towards Organizational Goals

    1. Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises the before and after school program, summer camp program, and teen programs.
    2. Recruits and trains program volunteers
  4. Fundraising

    1. Participates in a successful annual support campaign.  Active leadership required in staff giving and membership involvement

  5. Professional Development

    1. Maintains current CPR/AED/O2/First Aid and MAT certification
    2. Incorporates the five character values of the YMCA:  Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility and Faith and promotes the YMCA Mission

       6. Facility Management

    1. Effectively coordinates facility usage for assigned programs and activities
    2. Ensures upkeep of related facilities and equipment

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Youth Development Director will meet the qualifications set forth by the YMCA of South Hampton Roads and the Virginia Department of Social Services. Minimum qualifications include:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a child related field or Sports Management/ Recreation/Health Sciences is preferred, or college courses in related field or equivalent experience
  • At least 21 years or older
  • 1 to 2 years supervisory experience
  • Proficient computer skills with ability to learn new software programs
  • Current CPR/First Aid/O2/MAT certified preferred or must receive within 60 days of hire
  • YMCA Multi Team Leader Certification preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Will be required to walk, stand, kneel, stoop, push, and lift up to 50 pounds
  • While performing duties the employee may occasionally work in the outside weather conditions, and is exposed to wet, cold and /or humid conditions
  • Continuous operations requiring attention to detail and multi-tasking
  • Will be exposed to cleaning supplies
  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time
  • Must be physically able to successfully complete required certifications
  • During peak program seasons, may be expected to work night and weekend hours to meet program needs 

BACKGROUND CHECKS:
