POSITION SUMMARY:
The Junior Camp Counselor provides direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal resident camp. Provides a quality experience to children and parents focused on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, caring and faith. This is a seasonal, stipend-pay position, at $325/week; lodging and meals included.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for the safety, health, and well-being of a cottage of campers
- Assists in planning and implementing program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values
- Responsible for being an active participant in the activity area assigned
- Practice good role-modeling by acting in a way appropriate to mold young lives, both on and off duty
- Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
- Attends staff meetings and trainings
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies
- Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interaction
- All other duties assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least 17 years of age
- Previous experience working with children preferably in a resident camp setting
- Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: Archery, Riflrey, Climbing, general sports, arts and crafts, martial arts, outdoor living, dance, drama, water skiing, sailing, boat driving, skating, etc.
- Complete all required training before working in position, including Blood Borne Pathogen and Child Abuse Prevention
- CPR, First Aid, AED certifications within 30 days of hire date
- Previous experience with diverse populations preferred
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings
- Ability to work long hours outdoors while maintaining focus and energy levels
- Ability to walk considerable distances and spend significant periods standing
- Some activity areas may require ability to lift up to 50lbs and/or be flexible enough to perform the duties required – Sailing, Motorboat Driving, Alpine Tower
