POSITION SUMMARY:

The Lifeguard III is a position that maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool with any water depth or waterfront, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Maintains safe swimming conditions and constant surveillance of the pools with water depths listed on the certification

2. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required

3. Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff

4. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area

5. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.

6. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed

7. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving

8. Performs chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and takes appropriate action

9. Performs all maintenance and cleaning duties as assigned

10. Attends all staff meetings and training as required

11. Adheres to all YMCA of South Hampton Roads policies, procedures, rules, regulations and best practices

12. Performs and adheres to safety, cleanliness, and uniform standards associated with COVID-19 prevention

13. Assist in all areas as assigned and completes all projects and assignments as assigned by supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. YMCA lifeguard or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification (must cross over to YMCA in 180 days of employment)

2. Current ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent course from American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or National Safety Council).  Any BLS certification is only good for one year

3. Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness

4. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards

5. Maintain all required certifications and trainings

6. Minimum age of 16. Guidelines must be followed in regards to lifeguards ages 16 and 17 years of age working in the pool area

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Ability to pass lifeguard water test

2. Must be able to remain alert

3. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods

4. Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals

5. Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision

6. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue

7. Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and
   loud situations

8. Ability to work inside and outside (environments include humidity, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions)

9. Must be able to lift and pull 50 pounds

An offer of employment is contingent upon the receipt of satisfactory results to meet the minimum requirements of the position.  They may include criminal background and reference checks, E-Verify, drug test, driver’s license record, and/or a Child Protective Services Check (CPS).  Additional driver’s license checks, CPS, criminal background checks, alcohol, and/or drug testing may be required to be processed in the future in order to meet and/or maintain the requirements of this position.
