Gymnastics Program Instructor Aide

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Gymnastics Instructor Aide supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Youth & Family Program Director, all YMCA Gymnastic Instructor Aides will function in such a capacity as part of the YMCA and adhere to all rules and codes of conduct set forth by the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Act as a positive, self-confident role model for Birmingham YMCA Gymnastics [BYG] class participants.
- Maintain a professional demeanor appropriate for youth at all times.
- Promote the Y through personal example and member interaction.
- Maintain a safe and effective learning environment for all BYG participants at all times.
- Assist in teaching the three YMCA Gymnastics Recreational–Competitive Classes which are focused on Women’s Artistic Gymnastics [Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced]
- Class curriculum is based on the USAG Level 1-3 Progressive Development Women’s Artistic Gymnastics program.
- Must be willing to learn teaching techniques/drills/hand spotting for all three class curriculum.
- Assist in creating and implementing lesson plans and rotation schedules for classes.
- Assist in the assessment of gymnasts’ progress at the completion of each program session and suggest recommendation for next class.
- Maintain a general knowledge of USAG-Level 4 routines.
- Attend trainings and staff meetings.
- Work with the Lead Instructor to create and distribute relevant communications to parents of class gymnasts and respond to any questions that arise.
- Assist with equipment maintenance, including cleaning. Advise Supervisor of equipment needs and repairs.
- Set up and take down equipment and take down on each class day.
- Assist with starting classes on time, taking attendance, and emphasize safety and proper technique at all times to gymnasts.
- Know and follow all YMCA emergency procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned and agreed upon.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be able to communicate with others, be a team player, and have good leadership skills.
- Must assist in the resolution of any conflict that arises with gymnasts or parents.
- General knowledge of YMCA programs and procedures preferred.
- Experience training competitive gymnastics preferred; general knowledge of gymnastics required.
- Experience or ability to learn to assist with hand spotting preferred; willingness and ability to learn hand spotting preferred.
- Experience working with youth gymnastics preferred; interest in learning to work with or teach youth gymnastics required.
- Must have current CPR and First Aid certification or must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
