A YMCA volunteer is defined as anyone who willingly gives their time to help the Y accomplish its mission without receiving any compensation or special privileges.
Requirements to be a volunteer include:
- Minimum age of 16
- Completion of the application and submission of at least 4 references
- Successful completion of the Y's background screening
- Completion of personnel paperwork and required training
- Commitment to attendance for a specified time period
OVERVIEW:
The Program Volunteer creates a safe, engaging, and positive environment for participants by implementing activities and supporting program goals. This role fosters meaningful connections with participants, staff, and guests, while upholding the YMCA’s values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
This assignment, at the Southtowns Family YMCA, is specific to the enCourage, Benefit for Both, community-based respite program serving older adults living with Dementia and their caregivers.
GENERAL SCHEDULE:
5 hours, once per month (either the first or third Wednesday) from 10am – 3pm. March 2025 through December 2025.
VOLUNTEER RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Program Delivery: Facilitate activities according to the program plan, ensuring an enjoyable and impactful experience for participants.
- Leadership & Supervision: Actively lead and supervise participants, promoting positive behavior and engagement.
- Reporting Issues: Address challenges with proactive solutions and report any concerns, incidents, or issues to the supervisor promptly.
- Policy Adherence: Follow all YMCA policies, including child abuse prevention measures, safety protocols, and organizational work rules.
- Program Preparation: Assist with set up, organization, and cleaning of the program area before and after activities, maintaining a tidy and welcoming environment.
- Professionalism: Arrive on time, exhibit professionalism, and communicate promptly with the supervisor regarding absences or delays.
- Communication: Build and maintain positive, respectful relationships with participants, staff, and guests through open and effective communication.
- Certifications: Maintain any certifications required for the assigned program and keep them up to date as needed.
- Team Support: Contribute to the overall success of the program by collaborating with staff and volunteers, and offering support as needed.
VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS:
- Age Requirement: Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
- Knowledge & Skills: Have relevant skills, knowledge, or experience in the assigned program area.
- Professionalism: Demonstrate a high level of professionalism and the ability to follow instructions with attention to detail.
- Communication: Be friendly, approachable, and able to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences.
- Reliability: Exhibit dependability, responsibility, and a commitment to fulfilling volunteer duties.
