Day Camp - Senior Counselor

YMCA Buffalo Niagara operates Day Camp Programs at YMCA facilities and at elementary schools throughout Western NY.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides leadership and guidance to campers. Plans and implements camp activities and ensures the safety of campers.

GENERAL WORK SCHEDULE:  

Monday – Friday, up to 40 hours per week, while the camp program is in session.  Must be available to work between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Plan and implement camp activities as per the program design.
2. Supervise the assigned group of campers and provide direction to junior counselors.
3. Identify and resolve problems. Implement appropriate discipline techniques.
4. Pursue innovative and creative ways to implement camp components.
5. Ensure effective communication with parents of campers.
6. Develop and maintain positive, open communication between campers and camp staff.
7. Maintain and enforce work rules and regulations as required by YMCA Buffalo Niagara, the NYS Department of Health, and other regulatory agencies.
8. Maintain attendance records and perform other administrative tasks.
9. Participate with campers in the pool during swim lessons and free swim.
10. Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and field trips as scheduled.
11. Implement ongoing safety checks to ensure a healthy and safe camp environment. Implement emergency procedures when necessary.
12. Always remain with the assigned group and keep constant, visual track of all assigned campers unless relieved by a qualified staff person.
13. Set up and organize equipment and supplies for camp activities.
14. Follow and enforce department protocol to clean and disinfect surfaces. Enforce PPE compliance.
15. Maintain the cleanliness and organization of program areas.
16. Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must have at least one (1) year of experience as a Junior Counselor or an equivalent position.
2. Must be able to successfully plan and lead activities for children in a camp environment.
3. Must be at least 18 years of age or a high school graduate.
