Director, R&D Finance

Introduction:

Xencor is a public, clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company located in the Los Angeles area (Pasadena) and in San Diego. Our focus is developing high-potential XmAb® bispecific T-cell engagers and additional engineered drug candidates that leverage our differentiated technology platforms, and we are advancing our pipeline toward clinical proof-of-concept decisions. Our goal is to create high-impact therapeutics for patients with cancer and other serious diseases. More than 20 XmAb drug candidates engineered with our technology are in clinical development, and three XmAb medicines have been marketed by partners. This position will be a hybrid position with 2-3 days in-office.  Preferred location for this position is San Diego, Ca. 

 

Summary:

Responsible for providing comprehensive strategic and operational financial insights on development programs, overseeing the development related accrual process, and ensuring accuracy and relevance.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Planning and budgeting
    • Develops long-range operating plan for clinical development programs, enabling leadership to shape the strategic outlook of the organization
    • Forecasts clinical program operating expenses and headcount by category and department
    • Manages and improves various enterprise and program cost models to inform long-range planning and new business opportunities
    • Consolidates program planning and financial reporting, including clinical trial, manufacturing, and nonclinical costs
    • Functions as financial business partner to R&D leadership, with primary focus on clinical development department leaders
    • Contributes to strategic planning by providing insights and recommendations to improve processes, reduce costs, and enhance overall performance.

 

  • Analytics and decision support
    • Manages, builds, and improves program reporting packages that provide actionable insights to stakeholders and supports decision making
    • Facilitates periodic financial results review with applicable partners to ensure awareness of financial performance and identification of risks and opportunities
    • Manages internal resource planning models and ensures completeness and accuracy
    • Conducts scenario analyses, partnering with key stakeholders across the business
    • Supports requests for ad-hoc analysis / reports to Finance, senior management, Accounting, external partners, and other key stakeholders.

 

  • Financial close and audit support
    • Oversees clinical development-related accrual process, ensuring accuracy and appropriateness
    • Manages tracking and reporting of potential sales and / or development milestones
    • Provides ad hoc audit support for in-scope controls and reviews.
  • Business partnership and support
    • Focuses on development programs from preclinical through clinical stage, including manufacturing, with emphasis on clinical trial financials
    • Partners with Clinical Development Operations to deliver an accurate financial forecast
    • Conducts and analyzes trends for clinical-related spend and recommends improvements
    • Supports governance with financial and benchmark analysis on clinical spend
    • Provides financial analysis on competitive bids for vendor selection
    • Reviews purchase requisitions for financial impact and provides recommendations for approval
    • Reviews key vendor material invoices for accuracy and appropriateness

 

  • Other Finance responsibilities
    • Supports potential business development assessments and initiatives
    • Complies with Company policies, standard operating procedures, operating guidelines, and other written instructions
    • Drives development of meaningful financial analyses and creates effective presentations to communicate conclusions and recommendations to senior leadership
    • Proactively engages with Finance and Accounting colleagues and business partners to develop process improvements to planning, analyses, and reporting
    • Adheres to all department and company-wide policies regarding conduct, performance, and procedures
    • Provides oversight and direction to direct and indirect reports, as applicable, in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures. The responsibilities may include, but are not limited to recruiting, training, communicating job expectations, appraising and managing job performance, delivering feedback and coaching, and providing career development planning and opportunities
    • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Education/Experience/Skills:

Position requires a BS in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or relevant field, and at least 12 years relevant financial analysis experience. CPA required. MBA is preferred. At least 5 years’ experience with project reporting, operational clinical trial accounting and reporting, and advanced MS Office experience is also required. Requires in-depth experience utilizing financial concepts, including budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis. Experience in the above within the biotech, pharmaceutical industry, or clinical research organization is required. Prior experience and expertise working with Netsuite PBCS (or similar), PowerBI, Excel/VBA is preferred.

  • Knowledge of US GAAP and SOX principles
  • Ability to demonstrate competencies applicable for job based on Xencor’s Leadership Competency Model.

The physical demands of the office are normally associated with extended amounts of time sitting and using office equipment, including a computer, keyboard, and mouse, which can cause muscle strain. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit. Periodic light lifting of supplies and materials may apply.

Occasional travel may be required, including travel between Xencor’s Pasadena and San Diego offices. Work for this position is generally performed at Xencor’s worksite and requires full-time commitment.

 

Expected Base Salary Range:  $199,900 to $229,900
