Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-Greater New York) is an anti-poverty organization working to end homelessness in the New York area by 2050. We operate over 60 programs across New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County including emergency, transitional and permanent housing. Our services extend to families experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV/AIDS, veterans, youth aging out of foster care, adults with behavioral health or substance use needs, and others in need, including a special education preschool program.

Position: Construction Trainer

 

We seek a dynamic, motivated, and experienced Construction Trainer to lead our young adult program in acquiring essential construction skills and knowledge. As a Construction Trainer, you will play a pivotal role in guiding and mentoring participants through hands-on training and educational workshops, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue a career in the construction industry. This position requires a strong background in construction, a passion for teaching, strong communication skills, and a commitment to empowering young adults through education and practical training.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, education, or related field or equivalent work experience.

  • Proven experience working in the construction industry, with expertise in one or more areas such as carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, or general contracting.
  • Previous experience teaching or training individuals, particularly youth or young adults preferred.
  • Flexibility to adapt teaching methods and materials to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in the construction industry, with a commitment to promoting a culture for safety.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.

 

Construction Trainer Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Facilitate practical, hands-on learning experiences to ensure participants develop essential construction skills.
  2. Deliver engaging and interactive training sessions both in a classroom setting and on-site at construction projects, ensuring that participants understand and can apply the concepts taught.
  3. Provide one-on-one guidance and support to participants, addressing individual learning needs and challenges.
  4. Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages teamwork, creativity, and the construction industry and potential career pathways.
  5. Maintain accurate records of attendance, assessments, and other relevant data or reporting purposes.
  6. Stay informed about current trends and developments in the construction industry, incorporating new knowledge and best practices into training sessions.
  7. Assess the skill and knowledge levels of students through testing, observation, and feedback mechanisms. Identify skill gaps and design targeted training to address these gaps and enhance overall skills.
