Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-Greater New York) is an anti-poverty organization working to end homelessness in the New York area by 2050. We operate over 60 programs across New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County including emergency, transitional and permanent housing. Our services extend to families experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV/AIDS, veterans, youth aging out of foster care, adults with behavioral health or substance use needs, and others in need, including a special education preschool program.

Position: Credentialed Substance Abuse Counselor - CASAC (Mobile)
The Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) offers support to eligible formerly homeless clients living in Permanent Supportive Housing to promote well-being and stability. The CASAC is part of a specialized team working across four SRO sites in The Bronx and Brooklyn. The CASAC will be assigned a caseload of clients at 2-3 of those sites and will coordinate closely with case management, recreational and operations staff at the building(s) to which they are assigned. Significant travel between project sites and to escort clients to appointments may be required.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC), fully credentialed by NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.
- Minimum of two years’ experience working with adults with substance use challenges and cooccurring disorders.
Credentialed Substance Abuse Counselor Principal Responsibilities:
- Provide individual substance use and harm reduction counseling in alignment with best practice principles and program guidelines.
- Provide education on available addiction treatment services and supports and make warm hand-off referrals based on client need and preferences, including accompanying clients as needed.
- Develop and facilitate recovery oriented and psychoeducational group programming.
- Maintain linkages with community treatment providers.
- Utilize best practice approaches and evidence-based interventions to maximize client outcomes.
- Maintain service documentation to include client progress notes, observations and interactions about clients and incident reporting when necessary.
- Participate in internal and external case conferencing activities.
