SBA Underwriter II
Job Summary:
The SBA Underwriting Officer is responsible for 1) providing credit decision makers with the in-depth, independent risk analysis necessary for making informed credit decisions; 2) producing SBA-compliant credit memos to ensure loan guaranty protection; and 3) staying abreast of the SBA SOP to ensure government guaranty program eligibility and loan guaranty compliance.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Underwrite the creditworthiness of prospective and existing borrowers applying for government guaranty loan programs (7a & 504) assisting SBA Lenders and credit decision-makers in determining repayment ability and loan eligibility. Ensure appropriate credit underwriting, reliable risk assessment, and credit loss minimization consistent with credit policy and regulatory requirements.
- Confirm government guaranty loan program eligibility.
- Complete financial statement analysis for reasonable assurance of loan repayment.
- Confirm accuracy ofuse of proceeds chart.
- Confirm equity injection source.
- Guarantor analysis.
- Industry analysis.
- Complete collateral assessment in accordance with the government guaranty loan program requirements.
- Prepare in-depth credit packages and recommend credit decision to the SBA Lender and SBA Senior Credit Officer.
- Interact with the SBA Senior Credit Officer and SBA Lenders and participate in loan presentations to provide additional information and/or support conclusions reached in analysis. Serve as an accomplished resource regarding credit/industry analysis.
- Ensure the credit memo is completed in compliance with established Bank credit policy, procedure, and business strategy as well as SBA SOP guidelines.
- Suggest an asset quality rating based on relationship review.
- Complete / maintain SBA Underwriter sections of the Bank’s loan origination system (Sageworks).
- Collaborate with the SBA Underwriting Manager regarding underwriting procedures, continuous process improvement, and the line of business lending strategy.
- Assist fellow GGLD team members resolving complicated credit and underwriting issues achieving satisfactory resolutions.
Job Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or Bachelor of Science in related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
- 5 – 7 years' experience in credit underwriting or related experience with a focus on government guaranty loan programs (7a & 504).
- Thorough knowledge of SBA Standard Operating Procedures and eligibility criteria.
- A high level of interpersonal skills to communicate policies, procedures, and objectives effectively throughout the Bank and to cultivate working relationships with bankers and clients.
- A high level of analytical skill to assess and manage areas of responsibility, including determination of credit risk involved and making final approval decisions.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Thorough knowledge of commercial loans, principles, policies, and practices.
- Knowledge of current lending laws and regulations.
