Truck Helper & Sorting Room Worker
The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Full-Time Truck Helper & Sorting Room Worker for the Port Saint Lucie Thrift Store located in St. Lucie, FL.
POSITION SUMMARY: Receives, sorts, prices and prepares donated items for display in the store; determines suitability and pricing of items based on established standards; assists in maintaining the orderliness and cleanliness of the warehouse area. Assists in picking-up donations by riding in a Salvation Army truck and lifting, carrying, and/or hauling donations into the truck and unloading the same at the warehouse; assists in navigating for the Truck Driver; ensures the accountability, security, and safety of the donations when in route; assists in maintaining the vehicle in proper working order and in compliance with established standards.

Sorting Room Worker Responsibilities: Receives, inspects and sorts donated items such as clothes, shoes, household items, bric-a-brac, etc. according to the category and condition. Selects items suitable for store display and distributes same to appropriate area for further sorting and/or pricing; discards items in accordance with established procedures. Tags items with specially coded tickets and/or prices in accordance with established procedures. Hangs clothes on hangers and places same on clothes racks. Packs items in boxes and marks boxes accordingly; assists in transporting boxes to appropriate storage area. Prepares non-suitable clothes for the bailer. Lifts and carries items to the appropriate destination for further processing, storage or displaying in store. Maintains warehouse area in a neat and orderly manner; cleans floors, tables and work areas.
Truck Helper Responsibilities: Rides in a Salvation Army truck on a scheduled route in order to pick-up donated items; assists in navigating driver to destinations by reading a map and/or hand-written directions. Inspects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures; explains policy to customers regarding the types of items that can be accepted. Lifts, carries, and/or hauls donations into truck; packs items in truck in a manner that maximizes use of space, protects items from damage, and ensures safety. Prepares donation receipts for customers; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same. Maintains good relationship with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army. Unloads donations from truck upon arrival at warehouse; distributes items to appropriate locations in the warehouse. Loads truck of items to be taken to the dump. Performs routine maintenance of the truck; checks fluid levels on a regular basis; coordinates and may participate in repair work as needed.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: May assist in answering the telephone; provides general information and records messages. May assist in preparing receipts for donations. Assumes the responsibilities of the Truck Driver as needed. Assists in performing work in the warehouse as needed. Assists in maintaining the neatness and cleanliness of the warehouse and loading dock area. Performs other related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: No formal education required, and six months experience lifting and hauling heavy items such as appliances and furniture, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: Valid State Driver's License.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to sort items in accordance with established categories. Ability to determine the condition of items in accordance with established standards. Ability to follow instructions and work independently. Knowledge of the assigned geographic area. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to read and follow a map and/or hand-written directions. Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects under 50 lbs. Moderate mobility: duties are usually performed by combinations of sitting, standing, and walking on a frequent change basis. Distance of travel is usually within the
same building.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Sorting Room Worker’s work is performed in a warehouse environment where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like. Truck Helper’s work requires riding in a vehicle daily with exposure to the outdoors where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, snow, heat or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
