The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has an opening for a Lead Accountant (full-time) for the Southern Territory, located in Memphis, Tennessee.

Job Summary

Lead work of the accounting functions; compile analyses and review financial reports; plan, coordinate, monitor, and participate in all phases of accounting and bookkeeping functions and financial reporting.  Make sure that transactions are performed promptly and in compliance with established policies and procedures while maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the financial reports. Prepare various financial statements, including balance sheets, income, expense reports, etc., as needed by departments, officers, and Advisory Board; participate during audits by preparing the relevant audit backup information. Prepare and process receipts, deposits, and all other accounts receivable-type duties. Prepare and process invoices, checks, payroll, and general ledger journals. Prepare and generate the General Journal entries with the ability to research any differences and correct entries. Review peers’ batches before posting to the general ledger. Must be able to meet deadlines and work independently with minimal supervision.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of The Salvation Army’s mission, philosophy, culture, protocol, and organizational structure.

 

Knowledge of accepted principles, methods, and practices of computerized double-entry fund accounting and finance, budgeting, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

 

Knowledge of Excel, Word, and accounting software in general.

 

Knowledge of donor management software.

 

Knowledge of general business administration, supervision, and management principles and practices.

 

Knowledge and experience in budget planning.

 

Ability to prepare complex financial reports and records.

 

Ability to plan, develop, and initiate effective and efficient bookkeeping practices and methods to increase financial recording and reporting accuracy and timeliness.

 

Ability to effectively supervise and evaluate the quality of work performed by local accounting staff and to provide adequate and timely direction and assistance to ensure compliance with established procedures, accepted practices, and quality standards.

 

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration

 

And

 

Three to five years of progressive accounting experience performing double-entry computerized accounting work; lead/supervisory experience of staff preferred.

Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Ability to meet attendance requirements.

 

Ability to read, write, and communicate in the English language.

 

Ability to type and keypunch information into a computer.

 

Ability to perform routine and complex mathematical computations repeatedly, rapidly, and accurately.

 

Ability to effectively and efficiently work on multiple projects simultaneously without becoming frustrated or disorganized.

 

Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail with constant breaks in concentration associated with answering phones or speaking in person to clients requiring assistance.

 

Ability to manage mental and visual fatigue due to sustained periods of concentration, working under the pressure of deadlines, and continual interruptions in concentration.

 

Duties are usually performed seated. However, sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking.

 

Limited physical effort is required for walking, standing, lifting, and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time.

 

   

Working Conditions:

 

Work is usually performed in a typical office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like. Work performed at multiple locations.
