Regional Accountant

About this opportunity:
Administers the day-to-day operations of the Sage Accounting Program for an assigned region by using a functional double-entry accounting package; provides review of accounting records, ledgers, and statements for accuracy and completeness; maintains, and ensures the integrity of the chart of accounts, journals, fiscal closing statements, bank accounts, general ledger, asset management and depreciation, etc. for an assigned region' serves as liaison and technical support between the assigned local units and Divisional Headquarters.
Key responsibilities:
- Coordinates the computerized accounting system with the local finance staff to ensure proper internal control is established, to ensure proper accounting principles are followed, and to maintain the reporting system which provides up-to-date and accurate financial information for the Corps Officer or Unit Director and Divisional Headquarters.
- Provides overall review of accounting records, ledgers and statements for accuracy and completeness including but not limited to the preparation of journals, various ledger activity, maintenance and supervision of the chart of accounts, required cash logs, and custodian of all financial reports; ensure the accuracy and completeness of the same.
- Assist in preparation of fiscal closing statements including required reports and statements; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.
- Generates, reconciles, and reviews all ledger accounts for accuracy on a monthly basis; prepares and enters all correcting journal entries.
- Prepares all payroll and bank draft journal entries, payable entries and invoicing entries to properly record the expenses and receivables of same.
- Prepares and post all inter-company receivable transactions, ensuring accuracy of same; Assist local units in reconciling payables to Territorial and Divisional receivables; Prepares additional financial reports as requested by Divisional or local unit staff.
- Runs and reviews trial balance/accounts for integrity before closing the books both monthly and annually.
- Prepares and posts all journal entries into the General Ledger for requesting units; Maintains and updates financial statement formats according to Army guidelines.
- Maintains the Chart of Accounts for each location; updates and makes amendments where necessary.
- Assists with calculating and making appropriate journal entries in the General Ledger to record assets for each Unit in the assigned region according to Salvation Army policy.
- Assists with calculating depreciation of assets and makes appropriate journal entries in the General Ledger for each unit according to Salvation Army policy.
- Reconciles and maintains files for all bank accounts for all locations within assigned region.
- Provides phone support to employees at regional locations for minor problems that arise in Sage and serves as liaison to Divisional accounting staff in order to resolve complex accounting problems.
- Works cooperatively with Divisional Headquarters during the FASB "roll-out" compilation process including but not limited to entering date, preparation of schedules and worksheets, ensuring the work is carried out consistently with the direction and guidelines provided by Divisional Headquarters.
- Assists supervisors in various areas of accounting and finance as needed.
- Participates in continuing education opportunities, conferences, and seminars to enhance professional growth and encourages/supports continuing education of staff.
- Performs all duties with an understanding of the mission, ministry, philosophy, culture, and protocol of The Salvation Army and conducts all duties in accordance with the ministry of the organization and its Christian principles; conducts all communications and job duties with the highest level of professionalism client care.
- Attends seminars and update skills and performance as approved.
What we are looking for in you:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Business Administration or a related field.
- Two (2) years progressively responsible experience performing double-entry computerized accounting work with Sage accounting experience preferred.
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Ability to meet attendance requirements. Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking. Limited amount of physical effort required associate with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time. Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
