Corps Accountant
Location: The Southern Territory Headquarters –Nashville, TN
About this opportunity:
Responsible for recording financial transactions, maintaining and updating all financial records daily. Plans, implements, and administers the day-to-day operations of the Great Plains Accounting Program by using functionalized double-entry accounting package. Provide overall supervision and review of accounting records, ledgers, and statements for accuracy and completeness. Knowledge of the integrity of the chart of accounts, journals, fiscal closing statements, bank accounts, general ledger, asset management and depreciation, etc. Serve as liaison between the assigned local units and Area Command. Manage the reconciliation of the donor system. Maintains a general knowledge of the donor and participate in the reconciliation process of donations daily.
Key responsibilities:
Proof accounts payable and receivable entries and/or assets with the preparation to verify accuracy and completeness; for Area Command’s Accounting Department in the Account Supervisor’s absence.
Ensure proper internal control is established and to insure proper accounting principles are followed for the Corps, Family Store, and Area Command.
Prepares and processes one or more of the following financial documents for account payables: invoices, billings, check requests, and checks; reviews and verifies the same for accuracy and completeness
Posts and tracks payments to ledgers; tracks balances of the same; ensures appropriate staff remain aware of account balances.
Researches and reconciles accounts to ensure financial documents, correspondence, invoices, payments, spreadsheets, etc., are accurate.
Prepares correspondence regarding the status of accounts and responds to account inquiries; ensures all correspondence is prepared in a professional and tactful manner.
Perform reconciliation on any and all outstanding items on account receivable.
Photocopies and shreds documents in accordance with established office policies and procedures.
Provides overall review of accounting records, ledgers and statements for accuracy and completeness including but not limited to the preparation of journals, various ledger activity, and custodian of all financial reports; ensure the accuracy and completeness of the same.
Generates, reconciles, and reviews all ledger accounts for accuracy on a monthly basis; prepares and enters all correcting journal entries for Nashville Corps.
Runs and reviews trial balance/accounts before closing the books both monthly and annually for Nashville Corps.
Ensures and prepares all journal entries into the General Ledger.
Calculates and makes appropriate journal entries in the General Ledger to record assets for each Unit according to Salvation Army policy.

Assist in the preparation of all monthly financial information and reports to the Area Command.
Prepares and processes purchase requisitions in accordance with established policies and procedures; maintains organized and complete files with proper back-up materials for each requisition; prepares correspondence regarding the same; ensures that all purchase requisitions are processed in a timely and accurate manner.
Reconciles and balances donor records on a monthly basis utilizing the Finance Department general ledger records, communicate with other accounting staff on any and all restricted gift to ensure funds are use according to the donor wishes, Maintains a general knowledge of the organization’s donor system.
Receives and records all donations and other revenues on a daily basis; ensures accuracy of information in a timely manner.
Serves as back-up for the Corps Accountant, records, and deposits cash receipts; prepares daily tabulations and reports of cash receipts; distributes receipts to proper funds; makes daily entries into cash receipts ledger.
Performs all duties with an understanding of the mission, ministry, philosophy, culture, and protocol of The Salvation Army and conducts all duties in accordance with the ministry of the organization and its Christian principles; conducts all communications and job duties with the highest level of professionalism client care.
Attend any meetings, in the absence of the Corps Accountant as requested and participate in weekly staff meetings to discuss accounting procedures.
Maintain knowledge of the payroll and function as backup personnel.
Maintain filing system for all Salvation Army invoices to ensure proper coding and timely payment; ensures the files are maintained in an organized and efficient manner.
Maintains a general knowledge of the organization’s donor system.
Conducts reconciliations of Marketing/Resource Development donor software with the accounting system; ensures accuracy of information reported between departments.
Performs other related work as required.
What we are looking for in you:
Knowledge of The Salvation Army mission, philosophy, culture, protocol, and organizational structure.
Knowledge of accepted principles, methods, and practices of computerized double-entry fund accounting as well as finance, budgeting, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Knowledge of Lotus 123, Excel, Word and accounting software in general.
Knowledge of donor management software.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of general business administration, supervision, and management.
Ability to evaluate the organizations accounting and financial functions, respond to deficiencies by identifying and implementing appropriate corrective actions, develop and administer sound policies, procedures, and budgets.
Ability to effectively supervise and evaluate the quality of work performed by local accounting staff and to provide effective and timely direction and assistance to ensure compliance with established procedures, accepted practices, and quality standards.
Ability to integrate and interpret data from various sources and to plan, develop, and implement responsible strategies.
Ability to scrutinize financial reports and documents in order to ensure integrity, accuracy, and completeness.
Ability to make sound, logical interpretations of established guidelines and regulations quickly.
Ability to apply discretion and independent judgment when processing, analyzing and resolving routine accounting transactions and reporting in accordance with accepted accounting principles.
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in an effective and professional manner.
Ability to discharge the duties and responsibilities of this position consistent with the principles, standards, and the Orders and Regulations of The Salvation Army.
Ability to organize, lead, develop and maintain an effective and professional working relationship with all Finance Department Personnel, Salvation Army officers and employees, and professionals in the community.
Ability to conduct the affairs of this office responsibly, efficiently, and economically.
Ability to conduct and lead group presentations.
Possess knowledge of efficient methods of organizing, maintaining and securing financial records.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of financial records.
Certifications/Licenses:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Business Administration or a related field,
And
Two years progressively responsible experience performing double-entry computerized accounting work with Sage accounting experience preferred. Supervisory experience of one year or more is required.
or
any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certifications/Licenses:
