Divisional Music & Arts Manager
Location: Potomac Division Headquarters, Alexandria, VA

About this opportunity:Under the supervision of the Divisional Music Director (DMD), the Divisional Music & Arts Manager will operate within the Potomac division with a primary focus on youth music and arts ministry. The incumbent will assist in the planning, administration, and conducting of various music and arts educational functions at the divisional/regional/corps levels. The Potomac Division is comprised of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, DC (District of Columbia) and includes 56 Commands/Corps operations. The primary focus of the position involves direct support to corps and local leaders/officers. He/she travels throughout the division to assist corps in developing arts ministry programs and local leaders; teaching classes at the corps, divisional, and territorial level; maintains regular corps visits around the division; performs in various music programs and in areas of divisional support; performs general office duties to include preparing and distributing correspondence; assist in creation of educational resources; and maintains regular media presence through department accounts.
Key responsibilities:
- Assists Divisional Music & Arts Director in the management, planning, and implementation of all divisional music events and groups. (Music Camp, Music Conservatory, divisional and regional ensembles, music councils, NCB, DMA, etc.)
- As an active uniformed Salvationist, the Divisional Music & Arts Manager promotes the development, improvement, and advancement of the arts in the Salvation Army by instruction and modeling. He/She encourages and guides involvement in worship and evangelistic outreach in the Division. The Divisional Music & Arts Manager should regularly attend, as an active soldier, a local corps, and should be actively involved in the local music program to the extent that divisional duties allow.
- Travels to various Salvation Army units in the Division to aid in the development of creative arts and music education, as directed by the Divisional Music & Arts Director.
- Identify, develop, and coach regional ensembles and music educational outlets around the division. Meet with local corps regularly; solicit, recruit, and train group leaders for programs.
- Maintain regular communication and mentorship with young people in the division to help them develop the spiritual and artist maturity.
- Guide young people in the program on their transition from high school to college. Helping them identify scholarships and other means that will contribute toward the success of their future and the ministry of the Army.
- Assist in the planning of and attends divisional events such as weekend camps, Women and Men's' camp, Family Retreat, Youth Councils, Women's Auxiliary Luncheons, Soldier's rallies, etc.; assists in coordination of groups by selecting personnel and music and providing support for the specified events.
- Maintains the Divisional Library of Music and Materials; assists local leaders in obtaining materials for their own music programs. Performs preparatory research for large departmental furnishings and equipment purchases. Performs other related work as required by the Divisional Music & Arts Director.
What we are looking for in you:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in music or a related field, and;
- Two years’ experience developing, conducting, and participating in vocal and instrumental music programs preferably with The Salvation Army; or
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
Ability to read and hear music notes properly. Ability to play musical instruments.
Ability to stand for extended periods of time while leading a musical ensemble during rehearsals and performances. Physical requirements include lifting and carrying objects that at times may exceed 50 lbs.
Work is typically performed in a normal church environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like. However, there are times when performing job related duties outdoors will be required.
Bona fide Qualifications:
Must be an active Salvationist who regularly attends worship and is active in the corps music & arts programs. This position requires a lifestyle that aligns with Biblical values and adheres to the expectations of Salvationism.
