Pay Rate: $55,000/yr.
About this opportunity:
The Development Director will create and implement a strategic approach to advance community relations, promote donor care, and increase fundraising results through major gifts, corporate donations, grants, direct mail, digital fundraising, special events, campaigns, etc.
In carrying out the duties of the position, the incumbent will collaborate with the commanding officer, command and divisional staff, Advisory Board and Community Relations & Development Committee, and volunteers and follow the rules, policies, procedures, and minutes established by The Salvation Army Southern Territory and Potomac Division.
Key responsibilities (to include but not limited to):
Donor Development and Fundraising
- execute and manage an annual development plan for various fundraising activities, including major gifts, corporate donations, grants, direct mail, digital fundraising, special events, campaigns, etc.
- identify a personal portfolio of 20-30 corporate, community foundation, and/or individual major gift prospects.
- Build a plan for each prospect, cultivate and steward prospects using the Moves Management process, record all meaningful interactions and enter gifts personally secured in a timely and proper manner.
- Build corporate relationships/partnerships to secure volunteers, sponsorships, and donations.
Community RELATIONS
- Create and implement a marketing and communications plan and social media strategy to raise awareness about the mission and work of the organization, enhance support of its programs and services, and advance the annual development plan.
- Plan, coordinate, execute, and promote community engagement activities and events.
- Represent the organization and present at civic, church, and service club meetings, community events, business fairs, etc.
- Build relationships with community stakeholders to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization.
DONOR CARE MANAGEMENT
- Promote donor care to ensure that donors experience high-quality service, personal attention, and genuine appreciation to increase donor retention and acquisition and foster long-term engagement and investment.
- Promptly answer donor questions and resolve donor issues with patience and professionalism; collaborate with the Divisional Donor Care Manager to answer and resolve complex questions and issues; notify the commanding officer and the Divisional Development Director of any significant and/or recurring issues.
- Process all donations per the rules, policies, procedures, and minutes established by The Salvation Army Southern Territory and Potomac Division to ensure timely and proper depositing, receipting, and recording of gifts; work with the Finance Department to reconcile donation revenue.
Strategic Planning
- Create and implement an annual development plan that includes strategies, tactics, and goals to advance community relations, promote donor care, and increase fundraising results through major gifts, corporate donations, grants, direct mail, digital fundraising, special events, campaigns, etc. to ensure that resources are available to meet the needs of the organization, process annual development plan.
- Review revenue report, Top Donors report, Sybunt report and other relevant reports and provide to the commanding officer on a regular basis; monitor fundraising trends and patterns and adapt annual development plan strategies and tactics as needed.
- Share updates on development activities and achievements with the Advisory Board monthly and present at Advisory Board meetings.
What we are looking for in you:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; and three (3) years of experience in a comprehensive development program with progressively responsible experience and demonstrated success; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Valid Driver’s License is required.
Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) designation is an asset.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization.
- Ability to speak, listen, and write in a clear, thorough, and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques.
- Ability to anticipate, understand, and respond to the needs of donors to meet or exceed their expectations within the organizational parameters.
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.
- Ability to positively influence others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organization.
- Ability to assess situations to determine the importance, urgency, and risks, and make clear decisions that are timely and in the best interests of the organization.
- Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting, and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.).
WORKING CONDITION
Work may be performed in an office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like but not limited to the office environment.
