Job Summary:

Supervises and participates in the receiving, sorting, pricing, packing, and distributing of merchandise ensuring all items are processed in an efficient, effective and timely manner in accordance with established Salvation Army policies and procedures and local, state and federal regulations; ensures that all sorting activities are conducted in a manner that will provide maximum efficiency, productivity, and quality control; serves as liaison to store personnel to ensure stores receive the needed merchandise. 

 

Supervises, plans, schedules, and assigns the work of subordinate personnel; trains and instructs employees in the proper sorting methods and procedures; monitors work in progress and ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established policies and procedures. Supervises and counts racks at random to ensure the proper number of garments are on each rack. Supervises and provides stores with the appropriate supply of merchandise based on established policies and procedures as well as in response to any special requests. Supervises and participates in the sorting of merchandise into designated categories based on type and condition of merchandise; separates damaged items to be discarded and/or sent to the bailer. Supervises and trains employees in the tagging, pricing, hanging, and sorting of items based on their type and condition. Supervises and trains beneficiaries performing work therapy assignments within the sorting room. Supervises and monitors the productivity of all sorting personnel in order to ensure staff is properly allocated and assigned to tasks based on volumes to be processed; ensures compliance to warehouse policy and procedures as well as safety standards; ensures that all staff have adequate levels of supplies needed to perform their job responsibilities. 

 

Prepares and maintains production reports in accordance with established policies and procedures. Ensures that the sorting room work area is maintained in a clean and orderly manner and that all equipment receives proper maintenance. Reviews and submits timesheets and other payroll information for all direct report store personnel under his/her control for the timely processing of payroll on a bi-weekly basis. Understands the mission of the Adult Rehabilitation Centers and be able to clearly communicate the mission to customers.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to sort merchandise based on established categories. Ability to successfully supervise and participate in the work of production staff. Knowledge, skills and ability to successfully communicate, both verbally and in writing, in the English language.

 

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or G.E.D. preferred, and six months experience sorting and pricing merchandise in a retail environment with some supervisory experience preferred or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Ability to meet attendance requirements.

 

Moderate physical effort required associated with lifting and carrying 25 to 50 pounds of merchandise, materials, and supplies on a frequent basis.  Must be able to push or pull heavy loads, 50 to 100 pounds, of merchandise, materials, and supplies on an occasional basis.  Work requires frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, and some climbing.

 

Work is usually performed in a warehouse environment where there may be physical discomforts associated with changes in the weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
