Part Time Teen Center Tutor (Middle School/High School/Special Education Aide)

Job Purpose:

The Sycuan Education Department is seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and skilled Special Education Aide to join our team. This individual will work closely with our Resource Specialist Coordinator and all three centers (Early Program, K-5th, and 6th-12th) to provide personalized support to students with various disabilities, ensuring they receive the highest quality education in a safe, nurturing environment. Please be mindful that we only have a small handful of students to support. The ideal candidate will be someone who is patient, has exceptional tutoring skills, training in supports with students with disabilities, and passionate about making a positive impact in the lives of children.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities by monitoring, and supporting goals accommodations or modifications throughout the department (floating between our three centers from Preschool to High School).
  • Provide one-on-one or small group support to students with academic, social, and personal skills as directed by the special education Resource Coordinator and/or Director of Education.
  • Monitor and report on student progress towards academic and behavioral goals.
  • Assist with tutoring the adaptation of teaching materials and methods to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Facilitate inclusion strategies, as appropriate.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students by using positive reinforcement techniques, encouraging, motivating, and building confidence in students.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other staff to support the well-being and educational success of students.
  • Attend and contribute to meetings and professional development sessions related to position.
  • Provide a safe environment for children by modeling positive behavior strategies, observing children’s behaviors, enforcing expectations for behavior, and reporting any unusual situations and/or suspected abuse to the Education Department Director.
  • Support the Education Department by attending required meetings, trainings, workshops, conferences, events, community activities, and assisting with special projects as assigned.

Job Specifications:

Education and Experience:

Essential:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required;
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Education, Special Education, Child Development, or related field preferred.
  • Special Education, Instructional Aide/Assistant, or Paraprofessional Experience
  • Ability to interact appropriately with children of different ages
  • Flexible and collaborative

Desirable:

  • Experience working with Native American Families
  • ABA training or experience
  • Credits in Child Development/Psychology
  • Experience with Differentiated Instruction
  • Tutoring Experience

Skills and Knowledge:

Essential:

  • Previous experience working with children with special needs highly desirable
  • Ability to work with children and adapt to the needs of children
  • Ability to work effectively with parents, staff, and community representatives
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions and directives
  • Working knowledge of Office 365
  • Ability to perform basic data entry
  • Ability to routinely lift and carry 40 pounds
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism
  • Ability to stand and walk for up to 8 hours at a time
  • Ability to bend, stoop, push and pull
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks
  • Ability to appear for work on time
  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • Patience, empathy, and a positive, encouraging attitude toward students with diverse learning needs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of special education principles, techniques, and practices preferred.
  • Must pass a background check and have a valid CPR and First Aid certification.
