COVID Epidemiologist at Maine CDC in Augusta, ME

Overview

The COVID Epidemiologist coordinates and maintains Maine’s COVID surveillance activities, including monitoring surveillance data, leading all COVID outbreaks, and working with health care partners and all other public health partners. The COVID Epidemiologist gathers, cleans, and analyzes COVID surveillance data. In addition to required reporting, this data analysis is necessary for disease analysis, outbreak detection and response to emergency preparedness events.

Knowledge, Skills and Certifications

Specific qualifications needed to perform the job including, necessary licenses, knowledge, skills, education, experience, training, and technical skills.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A master’s degree in Epidemiology or closely related field or a Bachelor’s Degree in Epidemiology or closely related field and two (2) years of professional experience in epidemiology. Equivalent related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred candidates will have:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience with infectious diseases, especially airborne or respiratory diseases.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of internal and external partners.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office.
  • Extensive database skills including creation, management, and integration of diverse datasets.
  • Experience with statistical software (SAS experience is preferred).
  • Knowledge and experience with drafting technical disease information for providers as well as the general public.
  • The ability to guide strategic discussions and help groups to reach decisions that will further the mission of the Infectious Disease Program.

Duties and Deliverables

Major responsibilities include but are not limited to: 1) Leading the coordination of COVID surveillance activities, including monitoring surveillance data and publishing routine reports. 2) Working collaboratively with both internal and external partners including, but not limited to, Medical Epidemiology, Department of Education, Maine Primary Care Association, and others. 3) Participating in COVID response planning and implementation. and. 4) Acting as Epidemiologist on Call and After Hours Epi-on- Call on a rotating basis to respond to and appropriately triage disease reports and request for consults.

Additional roles and responsibilities include:

  • Writing and distributing weekly, quarterly, and annual COVID reports.
  • Reporting on status of federal grant deliverables in a timely manner.
  • Writing the COVID sections of federal grants.
  • Leading Epi response to COVID outbreaks.
  • Providing program representation at national, regional, state, and local level meetings, conferences, training, and workshops.
  • Participating in and/or facilitating all relevant emergency response drills and exercises.
  • Training to provide cross coverage in at least one other subject matter area.

 

Schedule

Normal working hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a one-hour lunch.

Once per quarter, this position serves as After-Hours Epi on-call for a period of one week. On-call nights and weekends are required for each resource and are on a rotating basis. Time spent on-call may be flexed within the same week or the following week.

This position works full-time in the August office (286 Water St.). After successfully passing the 6-month probationary period, this position is eligible for two (2) remote workdays per week.

These are full time 8 AM – 5 PM positions. Normal schedule is M-F, but modified schedules may be required as needed by Maine CDC. Hours worked over 45 are paid on a straight basis (hour for hour compensation) unless specifically pre-approved in writing by the Maine CDC manager.

  • Each resource must conform to the State working schedule (i.e. snow days, holidays etc.). If the State of Maine is working the contractor will be required to work.
  • May routinely work remotely two (2) days per week. Additional remote work may be pre-approved by the Maine CDC manager on a case-by-case basis.
  • All vacant positions must be posted within seven (7) days of employee departure for a minimum of 14 days. All rates must be approved by the Maine CDC manager prior to an offer being made to the candidate.
  • Rate includes an additional 10 days of PTO beyond the minimum (20 days total per year)

Compensation for roles at Staffing Solutions Organization LLC (SSO) varies depending on a wide array of factors including, but not limited to, the specific office location, role, skill set, and level of experience. As required by applicable law, SSO provides a reasonable range of compensation for this role. In addition, SSO provides a range of benefits for this role.
