Security Cadet - Work-Study

PLEASE NOTE: In order to be considered for Work-Study employment, you MUST have a FAFSA on file with SSCC for the academic term.
If a student is applying for work study employment for the 2024 Spring or Summer semester, a 2023-2024 FAFSA is needed to be on file with SSCC as a school of choice. If work study employment is desired for the Fall (2024), Spring (2025) or Summer (2025) semesters then a 2024-2025 FAFSA will need to be on file.
In order to be eligible for Federal Work-Study a completed FAFSA must be on file at SSCC with eligibility for need-based aid (Pell grant and/or Subsidized student loans). The Work-Study program offers part-time employment on campus to students enrolled in at least three semester hours at Southern State Community College. Please be advised that the number of work-study positions is limited. A background check will be performed on applicants prior to placement in a position.
Students employed in the federal work-study program will be paid directly by a paycheck from the college twice monthly.
DISTINGUISHING JOB CHARACTERISTICS
This part-time job is designed to develop the skills and abilities of individuals who may be interested in pursuing a future career in law enforcement. Security Cadets are allowed to work various assignments throughout the campus, including, but not limited to, the Front Desk, Campus Director/Patriot Center, and campus patrol. Security Cadets may also patrol third-party events hosted on campus, college functions, state competitions, and fundraising events.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform this job successfully, an individual must perform essential duties to expected performance standards. Reasonable accommodations are made as required for persons who are disabled under the Americans With Disabilities Act.
Provide excellent customer service; Act as a help desk attendant by assisting walk-in customers and answering questions related to Campus Security services.
Secure premises and personnel by patrolling property; may monitor security devices; inspects buildings, equipment, and access points.
Answer incoming phone calls, mail, and communications.
Report suspicious activity, criminal behavior, and security breaches
Promote Campus Security sponsored programs and campaigns
Provide courtesy escorts.
Lost property collection.
May work special events; or weekends. May provide traffic direction for special events such as graduation.
May work with the Behaviour Intervention Team (BIT) and appropriate committees.
Works with college constituents (and groups) to promote campus-wide awareness of safety concerns and proactive strategies to prevent hazards.
Maintains confidentiality of confidential or sensitive records and information.
Works assigned schedule, and exhibits regular and punctual attendance.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs other related duties as required.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED
Computer; printer; calculator; copier; fax machine; telephone; and other standard office equipment.

Confidential information included in College computer system; Student and other information covered by FERPA guidelines and agreed to in the College’s FERPA Confidentiality Agreement; Student social security numbers; Student, staff and faculty log in information; Computer administration log-in information.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Good office working conditions. The work requires using safe work practices with office equipment, and observance of general safety and traffic regulations. Exposure to typical traffic conditions and hazards when visiting other campuses or other locations.
USUAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The following physical demands are typically used to perform this job’s essential duties and responsibilities. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently stands, walks, sits and uses hands to hold and control tools and to control equipment. The employee reaches with hands and arms, climbs and balances, and stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls. Vision demands include long distance vision requirements when driving. Employee frequently lifts or exerts force on items, with varying weights up to about 50 pounds.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: public safety; federal, state, and local laws; computer software, programs, safety and security systems and applications; SSCC’s policies and procedures.
Ability to: exercise sound judgment in dealing with emergency or stressful situations; comprehend job protocols, develop and implement standard operation procedures and response protocols, work independently demonstrating initiative; operate an AED; develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, supervisors, job contacts, and general public; maintain confidential and sensitive information; maintain accurate and complete work records; assess and react appropriately to emergencies; function in adverse conditions and maintain self-control.
Skill in: strong verbal, written and interpersonal communications; preparing written reports., operating job-related equipment; software programs, problem-solving and conflict resolution.
QUALIFICATIONS
Interested students must have a completed Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file with Southern State and be eligible for need-based federal aid (Federal Pell grant and/or Subsidized Direct Student Loans). Students employed in the federal work-study program will be paid directly by a paycheck from the college twice monthly.
Students must also be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours a semester and meet the College's satisfactory academic progress criteria.
Ability to demonstrate clear evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff, and the community.
Applicant must successfully pass required background checks in accordance with Southern State Community College’s policies and procedures and applicable laws.
Ability to document identity and employment eligibility as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
