Savage is hiring a Regional Operations Manager to oversee our Western Canada Asphalt Terminals – this position will be based out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan with a responsibility for five sites located in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. The successful candidate will lead a team who plan, organize, and manage asphalt production and distribution. In addition to budgetary, safety, and leadership responsibilities for these sites, you’ll also be tasked with mentoring and coaching your team to build and strengthen their capabilities and skills.

 

Here’s a preview of what you will be doing:

  • Lead our team and work alongside them as they safely load trucks and unload railcars with hot asphalt.
  • Communicate with customers and logistics on scheduling and other issues to ensure a smooth and safe operation.
  • Be a safety leader by leading by example, establishing consistent job procedures, and training.
  • Develop and execute a business plan (budgeting, projecting, variance analysis, and cost management.
  • Participate in budget planning, budget reporting.
  • Handle challenges as they arise and initiate steps to resolve them using a professional approach. 
  • Learn, implement, teach, and execute Savage’s S7 Operating System and 5S standards.
  • Establish a strong relationship between Savage and the Customer in a way that creates value and provides opportunity to elevate our relationship with them and other Customers.
  • Work closely with the Customer to develop KPI’s and track them to measure the success of the operation.
  • Work to develop a strong team through mentoring and coaching.
  • Build site schedules that fit the needs of the terminal and provides a work-life balance for the team.

 

Here are some of the skills you’ll need to be successful in this position:

  • A proven ability to promote a culture of safety where safety and is held to the highest standard.
  • A sound understanding or aptitude to learn the complete process of operating an asphalt terminal.
    • Willing to become a subject matter expert for these sites.
  • Be an established servant leader with the ability to recruit, develop, mentor and build a successful team and bench strength.
  • Be a self-starter capable of working independently, in line with company goals, strategies and policies, and continuously seek improvement.
  • An ability to read and understand financial statements.
  • Have prior management experience with developing and executing operating plans and budgets.
  • A solid ability to build relationships with Customers, Team Members, and the Company, with an understanding that a key to your success will be to “do what you say you're going to do”
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills with an ability to communicate at all levels.
  • Strong knowledge of JHA’s, Safe Work Permits and LOTO.  
  • Understanding of P&ID’s and basic flows an asset

 

Here are some of the physical requirements of this role:

  • Comfortable and able to work at heights
  • Ability to travel on a frequent basis
  • Ability to walk 2 kilometers or more per day, on uneven terrain, able to climb steps and ladders
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. 
  • Ability to work, walk, and stand on uneven surfaces for long periods of time

  • Must pass a pre-employment physical, reference check, drug screen, and criminal background check. 
  • Willing to reliably fulfill and follow the proposed work schedule with little to no direction (self-starter).
  • A university degree/technical diploma or equivalent experience
  • Related Experience we consider to be an important asset:
    • Petrochemical field, oil & gas, transload, rail, or similar industrial environment
    • Supply chain experience by rail or truck
    • Rail switching and railcar mover operations
    • 5th or 4th class power engineering
