Applications Engineer

Job purpose:
The Applications Engineer will work closely with SSAB customers to provide technical consultation on the effective use of SSAB plate products. The incumbent will assist in developing new applications for existing products and will work on the development of new products for customers.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Interact with SSAB customers and potential customers to identify their technical requirements and to improve the effectiveness of their products using SSAB steel
- Identify and access sources of information (technical literature, universities, other labs) to expand understanding of steel behavior in identified end uses and as support for our products in the field
- Coordinate and conduct trials and product and process development activities with SSAB’s Research and Development, operating facilities and customers
- Analyze test results and prepare written reports summarizing findings for customer support
- Prepare technical bulletins, product brochures and training seminars
- Prepare and present technical journal articles for general publication and make presentations to the industry and our customers to support SSAB marketing activities
- Assist Sales in the resolution of customer complaints
- Maintain close working relationship with Research and Development, Operations and Quality Assurance personnel
- Participate in standards development organizations and industry technical associations and institutes relevant to assigned responsibilities

Qualifications: Education and Experience:
Required Education:
- Bachelors of Science in Metallurgical Engineering or related discipline
Required Experience:
- Five or more years in product development and/or manufacturing
- Broad general knowledge of metal performance and applications
- Knowledge of fabrication operations including cutting, welding and forming
- Knowledge of ferrous physical metallurgy and mechanical properties
- Strong analytical capabilities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred:
- Knowledge of SSAB products
- Broad industry specific product knowledge
Working conditions:
The employee will frequently be required to:
- This position operates in an office environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, network tools/equipment, phones, photocopiers and scanners. This role is partially sedentary (average of 6 hours per day), however, some standing and walking is required.
The employee will occasionally be required to:
- This position will periodically require work in the mill and in the field environment with some exposure to heat/cold, walking, climbing stairs/ladders, noise and wearing safety equipment/clothing for protection from hazards
- Some handling of materials is required. This would require the ability to walk, bend, kneel or stand, use of hands to finger, hold and handle, reach with hands and arms and to push/pull, lift or carry items up to 50 lbs.
- Drive or travel by airplane

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
- This position has no supervisory duties.
Position Type – Work Hours – Travel Requirements:
- Position is full time, exempt
- Position works an eight (8) hour day shift, Monday through Friday with additional overtime as needed
- Travel for this position is necessary and expected to comprise up to 20-25% of work hours – some international travel is possible
