JOB SUMMARY: The Construction Estimator will support all departments to derive project estimates. Responsibilities will include reviewing blueprints, specifications, and related documents, gathering subcontractor proposals, calculating project costs, and building project estimates. The Estimator will be involved in all preconstruction activities inclusive of project prospecting, attendance at pre-bid meetings, and vendor/subcontractor selection. Additionally, the estimator will work with project managers to ensure awarded project cost is managed against the estimated value.
Essential Functions:
- Perform accurate quantity take offs from plans and specification
- Obtain quotes and define scope of work for subcontractors and vendors
- Communicate effectively with subcontractors, vendors and clients
- Explore documentation in order to gain a deep understanding of the project requirements
- Build and maintain long term relationships with key customers
- Build and maintain long term relationships with key subcontractors and suppliers
- Visit site and attend onsite pre-bid meetings as necessary to prepare bid
- Coordination with director of construction on scheduling and capacity constraints
- Compute cost factors and prepare estimates by planning, producing a work schedule
- Negotiation and buyout with subcontractors
- Prioritizes and plans work activities; plans for additional resources; develops realistic action plans
- Perform additional assignments per Supervisor’s direction
- Prepares special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends
- Understand cost trend and price volatility of parts, material, resources
Experience, Competencies and Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management or Engineering, preferred
- 5+ years’ experience in construction estimating, preferred
- Strong understanding of construction processes
- Self-motivated, self-starter who demonstrates the ability to manage time effectively
- Proficient computer skills, knowledge and efficiency
- Able to read and interpret drawings and specifications to evaluate and comprehend the total scope of work required
- Broad understanding of the construction industry, petroleum industry is a plus but not required
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to meet critical deadlines
- Customer oriented
- Flexible interpersonal skills to work with all levels of management
- Must have a good attitude and be approachable
