Life Support Technician
About the Position
Under supervision, the Life Support Technician operate, maintain, and service life support equipment used to provide protection to users against hypergolic propellants, caustic agents, and toxic environments while performing operations on Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Operate mechanical equipment to possibly install, test, analyze, monitor and/or maintain by regularly handling, grasping, kneeling, and carrying.
- Ability to work in a loud or noisy environment.
- Routine lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Constant use of visual and mental alertness.
- Work from work authorizations and general instructions.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Ensure assigned Life Support equipment is maintained in a state of readiness and performs to designated parameters as outlined in procedures and permitted within the required certification areas that include: operations and/or maintenance of Emergency Breathing Equipment (EBE), Environmental Control Units (ECU), Protective Clothing Equipment (PCE), Self-Contained Atmospheric Protection Ensemble (SCAPE) support, resuscitators, clean room, and others. Life support equipment includes: gas masks, liquid air and oxygen back packs, resuscitators, SCAPE suits and similar emergency breathing devices, ECUs, PCEs, and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
- Evaluate test and repair equipment on a periodic basis.
- Provide foreign and domestic user personnel with various life support equipment at various worksites.
- Maintain communications with users throughout operation to ensure proper equipment functions.
- Travel may be required.
- Performs work in other classifications incidental but necessary to accomplish work assignment.
- Perform duties in compliance with Federal, State and Local laws and regulations and NASA and Air Force regulations.
- Complies with KSC/CCAFS energy management conservation regulations, Collective Bargaining Agreement, security, safety, and specialized programs or contractual requirements working within the limits of established policy.
- Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent, plus vocational/technical training beyond high school, and five years of job-related experience or equivalent.
- Thorough knowledge of Federal, State, and Local regulations including NASA and USAF relating to areas of specialty.
- Life Support Systems experience to include SCAPE, ELSAs, SCBA, Breathing Air Back Packs, and operations and maintenance of cryogenic and pressurized systems.
- US citizenship is required for unescorted access to assigned work area(s).
- Must be able to successfully pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI).
