Fire Sprinkler Fitter

Position Title: Fire Sprinkler Fitter FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

II. Major Areas of Responsibility
Under normal supervision, performs journeyman level specialized work to install, assemble, fabricate, maintain and repair fire sprinkler piping systems and fittings. The Sprinkler Fitter performs maintenance, tests, inspections and certification of various air, water, gas and foam fire protection systems and fire pumps. These systems are maintained in accordance with strict guidelines in order to comply with local building and fire codes. This position applies advanced technical knowledge to solve complex problems that typically cannot be solved solely by referencing manuals or similar documents. Work may be reviewed by supervision for general compliance to acceptable trade practices and procedures. This position may provide technical guidance to lower level technicians
III. Specific Responsibilities of the Job
1. Laying out work and measuring to locate position of pipe from drawings or other written specifications;
2. Cutting various sizes of pipe to correct lengths with chisel and hammer, oxyacetylene torch or pipe-cutting machines;
3. Threading pipe with stocks and dies;
4. Bending pipe by hand-driven or power-driven machines;
5. Assembling pipe with couplings and fastening pipe to hangers;
6. Making standard shop computations relating to pressures, flow, and size of pipe required;
7. Making standard tests to determine whether finished pipes meet specifications;
8. Install sprinkler heads, valves, and fire system appendages;
9. Connecting fire protection piping systems to water mains, supply tanks, pumps, and fire control equipment;
10. Apply applicable federal, state, and local codes and regulations, specifically NFPA;
11. Perform weekly, monthly and annual testing and certification of Fire Protection Systems;
12. Frequent travel between facilities
13. Perform other tasks and duties as assigned
IV. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working Environment:
Work is performed at a customer’s location in an office/shop environment and on job sites, in a construction environment with various tools and construction equipment.
Physical Activities:

Education or Equivalent:
Requires a high school diploma, GED.
Trade school coursework or apprenticeship.
License:
NICET Level I and Level II Inspection and Testing of Water-based Systems Certification required.
NICET Level I Water-Based Fire Protection Systems Certification required.
Must maintain a valid U.S. Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record. Position may require a Journeyman Fire Sprinkler License.
Certification in a commercial, industrial or large facilities environment.
Knowledge/Skills Requirement:
Minimum of five (5) years of work experience as a Sprinkler Fitter performing fire sprinkler piping and equipment installation, repair and maintenance, testing and knowledge of commercial fire protection systems, and ability to read and understand blueprints.
Knowledge of local, state and federal regulations regarding repair and maintenance for occupied spaces.
Ability to manage and accurately track material resources and time, and adapt to changing work priorities.
Ability to estimate time and materials, and manage resources. Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving and common sense skills. Ability to work safely.
Customer service skills to act responsively to customer inquiries and requests, and escalate the more difficult matters appropriately.
Communication skills to provide procedural and factual information, and to follow instructions.
Flexibility to build effective working relationships with staff, customers and others.
Ability to travel to various facilities, and to work independently and as part of a team
