River Edge offers outpatient services at our Emery Highway-Macon, Monroe County and Baldwin County locations. Outpatient services include behavioral health, nursing, and psychiatric assessment, stabilization and medication maintenance services as well as crisis intervention services as well as awareness, education and recovery groups.
River Edge is actively searching for a Full-time Substance Abuse Counselor to join our Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Program. In this role, you will be integral to providing substance abuse counseling services within the ACT Program.

Location/Schedule: Baldwin County site; Mon- Fri 8:30a to 5:00p with 1-2 nights and 1-2 weekends on call.
FLSA Classification: Hourly, Non-Exempt
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provides a broad range of paraprofessional social services to patients/clients/consumers and their families, participates in treatment team planning, and performs crisis intervention. Assists in dealing with personal and social problems. May provide supportive counseling to consumers and families and/or serve as a liaison for social services. May perform case management duties, and group skills training with adolescents.
- Provide assessment/evaluation as it pertains to substance use disorder(s) and co-occurring needs.
- Provide individual counseling, group/family counseling/training to clients seeking treatment for substance use disorders.
- Complete insurance authorization documentation as required to ensure all services are authorized.
- Document all services the same day the service(s) were provided.
- Adhere to all federal, state, and regulatory ethical/legal guidelines as a substance abuse counselor.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma/ GED equivalent
- MUST have a CACII certification.
- Associate or bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a social service-related field (social work, sociology, psychology, etc.).
- At least one (1) year of experience providing mental health and substance abuse treatment.
- Demonstrate knowledge and expertise with the chronically mentally ill population.
- All applicants must pass an intensive background check and pre-employment drug test.
- Demonstrate expertise and knowledge in mental health and substance abuse services and community resources.
- Exemplify excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Assessment and Evaluation: The Substance Abuse Counselor conducts thorough assessments to evaluate clients' substance abuse problems and mental health requirements, utilizing standardized assessment tools and conducting clinical interviews to gather pertinent information that informs treatment planning.
Education and Advocacy: The Substance Abuse Counselor educates clients and their families about the impact of substance abuse on mental health and overall well-being. Additionally, they raise awareness about substance abuse issues within the community through outreach activities.
Empathy: A successful Substance Abuse Counselor demonstrates empathy and compassion toward clients, fostering a supportive environment where individuals feel understood and accepted, regardless of their struggles.
Active Listening: By employing active listening techniques, such as paraphrasing and reflecting back content, counselors attentively tune in to clients' concerns and emotions, validating their experiences and building rapport.
Communication Skills: Effective communication lies at the core of counseling practice, as counselors articulate complex information in clear, accessible language, adapting their communication style to suit diverse clients' needs and backgrounds.
Self-Care and Resilience: Prioritizing self-care practices and seeking support from supervisors and peers, counselors safeguard their well-being, acknowledging the emotional demands of their work and cultivating resilience to navigate challenging situations effectively.
